Symptoms & remedies

  • Unit consumes large amounts of oil
    Cause: Excessive engine oil.
    Fix: Adjust oil to correct level. See Checking Engine Oil Level.
  • Engine will not crank
    Cause: Blown fuse.
    Fix: Correct short circuit condition by replacing 7.5 A fuse in generator control panel. Contact an IASD if fuse continues to blow.
  • Engine starts hard and runs rough
    Cause: Plugged or damaged air cleaner.
    Fix: Inspect and clean air cleaner.
  • Engine cranks but will not start
    Cause: No fuel.
    Fix: Replenish fuel / turn on fuel valve.
  • Wi-Fi network connection broken or intermittent
    Cause: Various.
    Fix: See Wi-Fi module owner’s manual.
  • Unit is set to OFF, but engine continues to run
    Cause: Controller wired incorrectly.
    Fix: Contact an IASD for assistance.
  • No transfer to standby after utility source failure
    Cause: Generator MLCB (generator disconnect) is OFF (OPEN).
    Fix: Set generator MLCB (generator disconnect) to ON (CLOSED).
  • No AC output from generator
    Cause: Generator MLCB (generator disconnect) is OFF (OPEN).
    Fix: Set generator MLCB (generator disconnect) to ON (CLOSED).
  • Engine won’t crank.
    Cause: 1. 15 amp fuse blown. 2. Loose or corroded or defective battery cables. 3. Defective starter contactor. 4. Defective starter motor. 5. Dead or Defective Battery. 6. 5 amp fuse blown.

    Cause: 1. Engine starts then shuts down. AUTO/OFF/MANUAL Switch at OFF, engine continues to run
  • Engine cranks but won't start
    Cause: 1. Out of fuel. 2. Fuel solenoid (FS) is defective 3. Open Wire #14A from Engine Control circuit board. 4. Spark plugs defective. 5. Door on tank not closed.
    Fix: 1. Replenish fuel. 2. Replace solenoid.* 3. Reconnect wire. 4. Clean, regap or replace plugs. 5. Close door on tank.
  • Engine cranks but will not start.
    Cause: 1. Out of fuel. 2. Defective fuel solenoid (FS). 3. Defective spark plug(s). 4. Valve lash out of adjustment.
    Fix: 1. Replenish fuel / Turn on fuel valve. 2. * 3. Clean, re-gap or replace plug(s). 4. Reset valve lash.

Adjust Valve Clearance adjustment

⚠ Allow engine to cool before adjusting valve clearance

⚠ AVR fan operates for 80 minutes after shutdown

Tools: 13mm wrench, 10mm Allen wrench, Feeler gauge

  1. Remove spark plug wires and spark plugs
  2. Remove four screws attaching valve cover, discard gasket
  3. Verify piston at top dead center (TDC) of compression stroke
  4. Loosen rocker jam nut with 13mm wrench
  5. Turn pivot ball stud with 10mm Allen wrench while checking clearance with feeler gauge
  6. Tighten jam nut to 174 in-lbs (19.68 Nm) while holding pivot ball stud
  7. Recheck valve clearance
  8. Install new valve cover gasket and valve cover, torque fasteners to 60 in-lbs (6.8 Nm) in cross pattern
  9. Install spark plugs, torque to 18 ft-lbs (25 Nm)
  10. Connect AVR fan and 4-pin connector
  11. Install AVR filter housing, torque to 50-96 in-lbs (6-11 Nm)
  12. Repeat for other cylinder if necessary
Adjusting Magneto Flywheel Gap adjustment

⚠ Air gap between ignition magneto and flywheel on single cylinder engines is not adjustable.

Tools: 0.008-0.012 inch thickness gauge

  1. Rotate the flywheel until the magnet is under the module (armature) laminations.
  2. Place a 0.008-0.012 inch (0.20-0.30mm) thickness gauge between flywheel magnet and module laminations.
  3. Loosen the mounting screws and let the magnet pull the magneto down against the thickness gauge.
  4. Tighten both mounting screws.
  5. To remove the thickness gauge, rotate the flywheel.
  6. Repeat the above procedure for the second magneto.
Adjusting Valve Clearance adjustment

⚠ Risk of Burn. Allow the engine to cool before performing the following procedure.

Tools: feeler gauge, 10 mm wrench, 13 mm wrench, 14 mm wrench, 10 mm hex key

  1. Remove spark plug wire(s) and position away from spark plug(s).
  2. Remove spark plug(s).
  3. Remove the four screws attaching valve cover. Remove and discard gasket.
  4. Verify piston is at TDC of its compression stroke (both valves closed).
  5. Loosen rocker jam nut using a 10 mm wrench (10 kW units) or 13 mm wrench (20-24 kW units).
  6. Turn pivot ball stud using a 14 mm wrench (10 kW) or 10 mm hex key (20-24 kW) while checking clearance with a feeler gauge.
  7. Hold pivot ball stud and tighten rocker arm jam nut.
  8. Inspect valve clearance to verify it did not change.
  9. Install new valve cover gasket and valve cover; tighten fasteners in a cross pattern.
  10. Install spark plug(s) and tighten to 18 ft-lbs (25 Nm); attach spark plug wires.
  11. Repeat process for other cylinder if equipped.

  9. Tenir le goujon pivot et serrer le contre-écrou au couple spécifié.
  10. Poser un joint de cache-culbuteurs neuf et remonter le cache-culbuteurs.
  11. Mettre les bougies en place au couple de 25 Nm (18 pi-lb).
Check and Adjust Engine Governor (Single Cylinder Units) adjustment

Tools: Frequency meter, torque wrench

  1. Loosen the governor clamp bolt.
  2. Hold the governor lever at wide open throttle position.
  3. Rotate the governor shaft clockwise as far as it will go.
  4. Tighten the governor lever clamp bolt to 70 inch-pounds (8 N-m).
  5. Start the generator; let it stabilize and warm up at no-load.
  6. Connect a frequency meter across the generator AC output leads.
  7. Turn the primary adjust screw to obtain a frequency of 61.5 Hz.
  8. Turn the secondary adjust screw to obtain a frequency of 62.5 Hz.
Check and Adjust Valves adjustment

Tools: 10mm allen wrench, flat feeler gauge, torque wrench

  1. Remove the four (4) screws from the rocker cover.
  2. Remove the rocker cover and rocker cover gasket.
  3. Loosen the rocker arm jam nut.
  4. Use a 10mm allen wrench to turn the pivot ball stud.
  5. Check clearance between rocker arm and valve stem with a flat feeler gauge.
  6. Set valve clearance to 0.05-0.1mm (0.002-0.004 in.) cold.
  7. Hold pivot ball stud with allen wrench and tighten rocker arm jam nut to 174 inch pounds.
  8. Recheck valve clearance to make sure it did not change.
  9. Re-install rocker cover gasket, rocker cover and the four screws.
Conversion de carburant adjustment
