Procedures

12
Battery Cable Connections installation

⚠ Verify the battery cable boot for the starter cable has been installed.

⚠ Damage will result if the battery connections are made in reverse.

  1. Connect the battery cable from the POSITIVE, POS or (+) post to the lug on the starter contactor.
  2. Connect the battery cable from the NEGATIVE, NEG or (-) post to the frame ground connection.
  3. Connect cables so the connectors are clean and tight.
Initial Start (Post Installation) installation

⚠ Correct any leakage immediately before proceeding.

  1. Turn off all electrical loads by setting the generator's main circuit breakers to OFF.
  2. Crank and start the engine; more cranking may be required to prime the fuel lines.
  3. Let the engine warm up about five minutes to stabilize internal temperatures.
  4. Inspect the engine/generator for fuel, oil and exhaust system leaks; correct any leakage immediately.
  5. When no-load tests are complete, apply electrical loads and check operation under load; run at least 30 minutes.
  6. Turn off all electrical loads by setting the main circuit breakers to OFF.
  7. Let the unit run at no-load a few minutes, then shut down the engine.
Testing Under Load installation

⚠ You must not allow the unit to overheat during prolonged operation.

  1. Apply electrical loads equal to about 75 to 100 percent of the unit's rated wattage/amperage capacity.
  2. Let the unit run at least 30 minutes with load applied.
  3. Check that the unit is not running excessively hot and that adequate cooling airflow is available.
Testing the LP Gas System for Leaks installation

⚠ DO NOT USE ANY FLAME TO TEST FOR LEAKS.

⚠ Gaseous fuel lines between tank and secondary regulator are under positive pressure; outlet side of secondary regulator is negative pressure and can draw flame into a line or fitting causing an explosion.

Tools: Soap and water solution

  1. Obtain a separate source of 12 volts DC to open the gaseous fuel solenoid valve.
  2. Test all connections, hoses, valve regulators, fittings and other fuel system parts.
  3. Test under gas or air pressure of not less than 90 psi (620 kPa).
  4. Use soap and water or an equivalent solution to check for leaks.
  5. Do not place the generator into service until the system is properly tested.
Changing the Engine Oil and/or Oil Filter maintenance

⚠ Do not fill above the FULL mark.

  1. Run the engine until thoroughly warmed up (at least five minutes), then shut it off.
  2. Remove the oil drain plug and drain the oil into a suitable container.
  3. Replace the oil drain plug.
  4. Remove the old oil filter by turning it counterclockwise.
  5. Apply a light coating of clean engine oil to the new filter gasket.
  6. Screw the new filter on by hand until the gasket lightly contacts the adapter.
  7. Tighten the filter an additional 3/4 to one turn.
  8. Fill crankcase with 1.4 liters of recommended oil; install and tighten the dipstick.
  9. Start the engine and check for leaks.
Checking and Setting the Spark Plug Gap maintenance

⚠ Sparking can occur if the wire terminal does not fit firmly on the spark plug terminal end.

Tools: Wire feeler gauge, Wire brush

  1. Clean the area around the base of the spark plug.
  2. Remove the spark plug and check its condition.
  3. Replace the spark plug if worn or if reuse is questionable.
  4. Check the spark plug gap using a wire feeler gauge.
  5. Adjust the gap to 0.030 inch (0.76 mm) by bending the ground electrode.
Checking the Engine Oil Level maintenance

⚠ Never operate the engine with the oil level below the Add mark on the dipstick.

  1. Be sure the generator is as level as possible.
  2. Remove the dipstick and wipe it dry with a clean, lint-free cloth.
  3. Install and tighten the dipstick cap; then remove it again.
  4. Oil level should be at the dipstick FULL mark.
  5. If needed, remove the oil fill cap and slowly add oil to FULL mark.
  6. Do not fill above the FULL mark.
  7. Install and tighten the oil fill cap and dipstick before operating.
Checking the Engine Spark Plug maintenance

⚠ Do not blast the spark plug to clean.

Tools: Wire feeler gauge, Wire brush

  1. Clean the area around the base of the spark plug to keep dirt and debris out of the engine.
  2. Remove the spark plug and check its condition; replace if worn or if reuse is questionable.
  3. Check the spark plug gap using a wire feeler gauge and adjust to 0.030 inch (0.76 mm) by bending the ground electrode.
Cleaning the Foam Precleaner maintenance
  1. Turn the knob counterclockwise to loosen; remove cover, foam precleaner and paper filter.
  2. Wash the foam precleaner in liquid detergent and water.
  3. Wrap the foam precleaner in a clean cloth and gently squeeze it dry.
  4. Saturate the foam precleaner in clean engine oil.
  5. Gently squeeze it in a clean cloth to remove excess oil; do not twist.
  6. Install foam precleaner into the cover, followed by the paper filter.
  7. Install the cover, foam precleaner and paper filter.
  8. Replace the knob to retain the filter in place.
Maintaining the Engine Air Cleaner (Foam Precleaner) maintenance
  1. Turn the knob counterclockwise to loosen.
  2. Remove the cover, foam precleaner and paper filter.
  3. Remove the foam precleaner from the cover.
  4. Wash the foam precleaner in liquid detergent and water.
  5. Wrap the foam precleaner in a clean cloth and gently squeeze it dry.
  6. Saturate the foam precleaner in clean engine oil, then gently squeeze out excess oil (do not twist).
  7. Install the foam precleaner into the cover, followed by the paper filter with tabs locked into slots.
  8. Install the cover, foam precleaner and paper filter.
  9. Replace the knob to retain the filter in place.
Out of Service Procedure maintenance

⚠ Never store the battery on any concrete or earthen floor.

  1. Start the engine and let it warm up.
  2. Close the fuel shutoff valve in the fuel supply line and allow the unit to shut down.
  3. While the engine is still warm, drain the oil completely and refill the crankcase with SAE 10W-30 oil having API classification 'For Service SF'.
  4. Attach a tag to the engine indicating the viscosity and classification of the oil in the crankcase.
  5. Remove the spark plug and pour two or three tablespoons of clean engine oil into the spark plug threaded openings; reinstall and tighten the plug.
  6. Remove the battery and store it in a cool, dry room on a wooden board.
  7. Clean and wipe the entire generator.
