Procedures
12Connection of the starter battery block installation
⚠ Wrong battery connection can cause short-circuit and fire.
⚠ Battery negative may not be connected to boat ground or protective grounding of 120 V installation.
- Install separate starter battery for generator.
- Attach positive cable directly at starter solenoid switch.
- Attach negative cable underneath starter motor at engine mount.
- Install fuse and battery circuit breaker in positive cable within 300 mm of battery.
- Connect cables first at generator, then at battery.
- Ensure battery voltage matches start system voltage.
Insulation test installation
Tools: voltmeter
- Switch off all on-board electrical devices.
- Start generator.
- Measure AC voltage between generator housing and AC-Control box, and between generator housing and ground.
- Measured voltage must not exceed 50 mV.
- Check safety systems and RCD if installed.
- Check all electrical devices are connected to common ground.
Check and discharge the capacitors maintenance
⚠ Charged capacitors can be lethal; do not touch bare contacts.
Tools: Multimeter with capacitor measuring, Discharge reactor 5-10 kOhm, Insulated pliers/screwdriver
- Never check capacitors while generator motor is running.
- Disconnect terminal lead wires using insulated pliers or screwdriver.
- Discharge capacitors by bridging terminals with discharge reactor.
- For three-phase capacitors discharge between every phase.
- Measure capacity with multimeter set to capacitor measuring.
Checking oil-level maintenance
⚠ Burn hazard; generator and coolant can be hot
Tools: paper towels / cloth
- Place generator level.
- Run generator about 10 minutes to warm engine.
- Wait 3 minutes for oil to flow back.
- Assure generator against accidental start.
- Open generator casing.
- Pull and clean oil dipstick.
- Reinsert dipstick and wait 10 seconds.
- Pull dipstick and read oil-level.
Clean raw water filter maintenance
- Close water cock.
- Release raw water filter.
- Beat filter basket to remove debris.
- If water seeps through cover, check sealing ring between caps and filter holder.
Daily routine checks before starting maintenance
- Check oil level; ideal level 2/3.
- Check state of cooling water.
- Open sea cock for cooling water intake.
- Check raw water filter.
- Check all hose connections and hose clamps for leakage.
- Check all electrical lead terminal contacts are firm.
- Check motor and generator mounting screws are tight.
- Switch land electricity/generator switch to zero before starting.
- Check automatic controls functions and oil pressure.
Opening the GFK sound insulation capsule maintenance
- Pull handle in arrow direction.
- Lift lash of closure pin.
- Remove upper sound insulation cover.
Opening the MPL sound insulation capsule maintenance
Tools: flat head screwdriver
- Rotate closures roughly 180° counter-clockwise with flat head screwdriver.
- Pull sidewalls out by gripping into the slots.
Refilling oil maintenance
Tools: engine oil
- Check oil-level.
- Pull oil dipstick out of check rail.
- Open oil filler cap.
- Fill in oil approx. 1/2 litre and wait about 2 minutes.
- Wipe dipstick and check oil-level.
- Repeat steps 4-6 if oil-level still under 2/3.
Replace air filter mat/element maintenance
Tools: Spanner size 8 mm
- Open air suction housing (six screws, 8 mm) or release pull-out holder/snap fasteners.
- Remove old air filter mat/element.
- Install new air filter mat/element.
- Close/reassemble housing.
Replace the air filter mat with six screws maintenance
Tools: spanner 8 mm
- Open air suction housing by loosening six screws on housing cover.
- Change air filter mat.
- Close suction air housing.
Replacement of engine oil and engine oil filter maintenance
⚠ Burn hazard
⚠ Dispose used oil and filter properly
Tools: open-ended wrench 17 mm, oil filter wrench, container, paper towels and cloth, oil-resistant mat
- Warm engine about 10 minutes, then wait 3 minutes.
- Prepare oil-resistant mat and collection container.
- Loosen oil filling cap.
- Open oil drain screw with 17 mm wrench and drain oil.
- Remove used oil filter with filter wrench.
- Clean filter holder and oil new filter seal.
- Install new filter by hand.
- Refill engine oil and check level.
- Run engine 10 minutes, stop and check oil-level.
- Clean up oil splashes and check drain screw for leaks.
