Procedures

12
Adjust oil pressure relief valve adjustment

⚠ Check oil pressure gauge before making any other test.

  1. Warm engine thoroughly.
  2. Loosen locknut on slotted stud near breather tube.
  3. Turn stud inward to increase, outward to decrease pressure.
  4. Tighten locknut securely after adjustment.
Carburetor Idle Adjustment adjustment
  1. Run engine at normal operating temperature with no load.
  2. Turn idle adjusting needle in until engine loses considerable speed.
  3. Turn needle out until engine runs smoothly.
Carburetor Main Adjustment adjustment

Tools: Carburetor adjusting tool

  1. Loosen packing nut before adjusting.
  2. Turn main adjusting needle out about two full turns (early models only).
  3. Slowly turn needle in until engine begins to lose speed.
  4. Very slowly turn needle out until engine runs smoothly at full power and speed.
  5. Tighten packing nut snug after adjustment.
Governor Adjustment adjustment

⚠ If spring moved in too far, engine hunts.

Tools: Tachometer

  1. Verify carburetor is properly adjusted and engine thoroughly warmed up.
  2. Check linkage length so carburetor throttle lever stop just touches bottom of carburetor body.
  3. Turn governor ball joint about two more complete turns to shorten linkage; tighten locknut.
  4. Set speed control lever to POWER position.
  5. Adjust spring tension for about 1850 rpm no-load (1550 rpm on 50 Hz models).
  6. Pull speed control lever to WELD position; speed should be about 2700 rpm no-load.
  7. Check speed while welding at maximum current; speed should drop about 200 rpm.
Ignition Timing Adjustment adjustment

⚠ Do not use 12-volt coil tester; use 6-volt tester.

Tools: Continuity light, Timing light

  1. Remove cover from breaker box.
  2. Loosen mounting screws and shift breaker box to align witness marks if far off.
  3. Slowly crank engine by hand until flywheel witness mark and TC mark on gear cover align.
  4. Adjust breaker point gap to 0.020 inch (0.51 mm) at full separation.
  5. Turn flywheel left about two inches past 25 degree mark, then slowly right.
  6. Note whether points just separate when TC mark aligns with correct degree mark (19 or 25 degrees).
  7. Loosen breaker box screws and shift slightly if timing incorrect.
  8. Tighten breaker box mounting screws securely and reinstall cover.
Position brush rig to neutral adjustment

⚠ If adjusted so brushes arc, wear is rapid and generator may overheat.

  1. Check reference mark on edge of brush rig.
  2. Align mark with boss in the end bell.
  3. Adjust until brushes do not arc (neutral position).
Tappet Adjustment adjustment

Tools: Feeler gauge, Standard automotive-type wrench

  1. Remove valve covers.
  2. Facing flywheel, slowly crank engine until left-hand intake valve opens and closes.
  3. Continue about 1/4 turn until flywheel mark and TC mark align.
  4. Check each valve clearance with thinner gauge passing freely and thicker gauge not.
  5. Turn adjustable self-locking screw to correct clearance.
  6. To adjust right-hand cylinder, crank engine one revolution and align marks again.
  7. Repeat adjustment procedure for right-hand cylinder valves.
Fuel Pump Check diagnostic

⚠ Prevent fire or explosion due to open flame, pilot light, or ignition arc.

  1. Disconnect fuel line at carburetor.
  2. Direct fuel line flow into suitable container in well ventilated area.
  3. Crank engine slowly by hand and observe if fuel comes from line.
  4. If fuel pump fails and tank/line are open, repair or replace pump.
Test armature windings diagnostic

⚠ Replace armature if winding is grounded or open.

Tools: Ohmmeter, Armature growler, Steel strip

  1. Lift or remove all brushes.
  2. Disconnect load circuit wires.
  3. Test DC ground: prod on commutator and on shaft.
  4. Test AC ground and open: prods on collector rings.
  5. Test DC open with growler and steel strip.
Connecting Welders in Parallel installation

⚠ Do not attempt to parallel the welder's AC output.

Tools: Tachometer, Voltmeter

  1. Start both engines before connecting cables.
  2. Adjust engines to same no-load speed using tachometer or voltmeter.
  3. Connect paralleling cables to identical current jacks.
  4. Select identical current jack receptacles totaling ampere requirement.
  5. Connect cable between identical receptacles with tight connection.
  6. Connect another equal cable to NEG jack of only one welder.
  7. Complete connection to second welder NEG jack only after both running.
Break-In Procedure maintenance

⚠ Before fifty operating hours, cylinder head bolts must be re-torqued to avoid blown gaskets.

  1. One-half hour at 1/2 load.
  2. One-half hour at 3/4 load.
  3. Full load.
Out-of-Service Protection maintenance

⚠ Do not smoke while servicing batteries.

  1. Run engine until thoroughly warm.
  2. Turn off fuel supply and run engine until it stops.
  3. Drain oil from oil base while warm; refill with new oil and attach warning tag.
  4. Remove each spark plug, pour one ounce rust inhibitor or SAE #30 oil into each cylinder, crank slowly, install plugs.
  5. Service air cleaner.
  6. Clean governor linkage and wrap with clean cloth.
  7. Plug exhaust outlet and wipe entire unit.
  8. Disconnect battery on electric start models and follow storage procedure.
