Procedures
12Adjusting the valve clearance at Kubota 02 series adjustment
⚠ Mark valves already checked
Tools: Wrench W.A.F. 10 mm, Spanner W.A.F. 11 mm, Flat screwdriver, Feeler gauge
- Unscrew valve cover.
- Rotate crankshaft until valve to be adjusted is fully open; determine dead centre.
- Rotate crankshaft 360°; valve is then closed.
- Check valve clearance with feeler gauge; cold clearance 0.145 mm to 0.185 mm.
- Loosen counter nut; adjust with rocker arm screw; retighten counter nut; recheck.
- Repeat for other valves; refit valve cover and firmly tighten screws.
How to connect two 12V batteries to a 24V battery bank installation
⚠ Observe correct connection sequence to avoid short-circuit and fire
- Connect (+) cable of first battery.
- Connect (-) cable of second battery.
- Connect (+) cable of second battery.
- Connect (-) cable of first battery.
- Disconnect batteries in reverse procedure.
Checking oil-level maintenance
⚠ Burn hazard: generator and coolant can be hot
Tools: Paper towels/cloth, Oil dipstick
- Place generator level; for marine generators measure when ship is not lop-sided.
- Run generator about 10 minutes to warm engine; wait 3 minutes for oil return.
- Assure generator against accidental start; open generator casing.
- Pull oil dipstick out, clean it, reinsert and wait 10 seconds.
- Pull dipstick out and read oil level at lower end; recommended level is 2/3 between min and max.
- Refill if below 1/3; if below MIN, check operating hours since last oil change.
First filling and ventilation of the internal cooling water circuit maintenance
⚠ Risk of scalding; hot cooling water may leak
⚠ Never open vent screw while generator is running
Tools: Protective clothing
- Fill external cooling water expansion tank with coolant to max marking; open cover temporarily.
- Open venting screw at pipe socket of internal cooling water pump until bubble-free coolant escapes; close.
- Open venting screw at thermostat housing; close when air-free water comes out.
- Check water level in expansion tank during venting; fill if necessary.
- Start generator; do not load; switch off after approx. 10 seconds.
- Repeat steps 1-4 until no more air comes out at thermostat housing vent screw.
- Close venting screws; fill expansion tank to max marking; close expansion tank.
- Repeat ventilating process 10 operating hours after first start-up if necessary.
Refilling Oil maintenance
⚠ Burn hazard
Tools: Engine oil, Paper towels/cloth
- Check oil-level as described.
- Pull out oil dipstick; open oil filler cap.
- Fill in engine oil approximately 1/2 litre; wait about 2 minutes.
- Wipe oil dipstick, reinsert, pull out and check oil level.
- Repeat steps if oil level still below 2/3.
- Reinsert dipstick, close oil filler cap, remove oil stains, close casing.
Replace the air filter mat maintenance
Tools: Spanner size 8 mm
- Open air suction housing by loosening six screws on housing cover with 8 mm spanner.
- Change air filter mat.
- Close suction air housing.
Replacement of engine oil and engine oil filter maintenance
⚠ Burn hazard
⚠ Used oil is toxic and must be disposed properly
Tools: Open-ended wrench 17 mm, Oil filter wrench, Container, Oil-resistant mat, Paper towels
- Place generator level; warm engine about 10 minutes; wait 3 minutes.
- Assure against accidental start; open casing; prepare oil-resistant mat and container.
- Release or open oil drain hose; unscrew oil filling cap.
- Open oil drain screw with 17 mm open-ended wrench; drain used oil.
- Remove used oil filter with filter wrench; clean oil screen on EA300 engines.
- Brush a thin oil layer on new filter seal; screw new filter in by hand.
- Refit oil drain screw with new sealing; fill engine oil; check level every 2 litres.
- Run engine 10 minutes; stop; check oil level after several minutes; top up if low.
- Clean up oil splashes; check drain screw for leaks; dispose of oil and filter properly.
Replacement of the fuel filter maintenance
⚠ Clogged filter causes decreased power output
Tools: Clamping tool
- Clamp fuel inlet before exchanging filter.
- Remove hoses from used filter and fasten them to the new filter.
- Observe arrow on filter housing for fuel flow direction.
- Replace at latest every 300 operating hours or depending on fuel contamination.
