Tools: Feeler gauge, Wrench

1. Bring No. 1 cylinder to top dead center on compression stroke.
2. Align top mark of crank pulley with timing gear case mark.
3. Loosen lock nut and adjust clearance with adjustment screw.
4. Clearance on both intake and exhaust valves: 0.008 in. (0.2 mm).
5. Repeat for each cylinder; adjust each set of valves individually.
6. Replace rocker arm cover and tighten cover nuts to 5 - 8 ft/lbs.

Tools: Feeler gauge, Wrench

1. Adjust valve clearance after 1000 hours or as needed.
2. Bring No. 1 cylinder to top dead center on the compression stroke; align top mark of crank pulley with timing gear case.
3. Remove the rocker arm cover and turn the crankshaft forward and backward to confirm TDC.
4. Loosen the lock nut and adjust clearance between rocker arm and valve guide with the adjustment screw.
5. Repeat steps 3 and 4 for each cylinder; adjust each valve set individually.
6. Replace the rocker arm cover and tighten cover nuts.

Tools: Feeler gauge, Wrench

1. Adjust valve clearance after 1000 hours or as needed.
2. Bring No. 1 cylinder to top dead center on compression stroke by aligning crank pulley timing mark.
3. Remove rocker arm cover and turn crankshaft to confirm TDC.
4. Loosen lock nut and adjust clearance between rocker arm and valve guide with the adjustment screw.
5. Repeat for each cylinder; each set of valves adjusted individually.
6. Replace rocker arm cover and tighten nuts.

⚠ Do not remove the water fill cap of an overheated engine. Escaping high temperature steam can cause severe burns.

⚠ If the oil level is normal, DO NOT restart the engine; call your dealer.

1. Engage the preheat switch to check the temperature gauge.
2. If above 205°F (96°C), use the Trouble Shooting Guide to isolate the cause of the overheat.
3. Make repairs; restart after the temperature gauge registers below 200°F (94°C).
4. Watch the temperature gauge regularly and turn off the unit if temperature rises above 205°F (96°C).
5. If shutdown activates within normal temperature, check exhaust temperature, sea water strainer and impeller.

⚠ Do NOT run the engine with the air cleaner removed.

1. Inspect air cleaner every 250 hours; check more often in dusty conditions.
2. Marine sets: if dirty, wash element in soapy water, rinse and dry before reinstalling.
3. Replace if necessary.
4. C-Series sets: element cannot be cleaned, replace when necessary.
5. Ensure no impurities enter the engine while changing the element.

⚠ Battery gas can explode. Keep all flames and sparks away from batteries.

⚠ Sealed batteries: see manufacturer charging and booster instructions.

1. Before changing or using booster batteries, check battery electrolyte level; add distilled water if necessary.
2. Booster and main batteries must have the same voltage rating.
3. Connect positive (+) terminal of booster battery to positive (+) terminal of main battery; connect negative (-) of booster to ground on engine block.
4. Remove booster battery after starting engine.

⚠ Never use a flushing oil.

⚠ Dispose of waste oil in an approved manner.

Tools: Oil change tube

1. Change oil and filter after 50 hours of operation.
2. Again at 100 hours, then every 250 hours.
3. In cold weather change every 100 hours or six weeks.
4. Change oil when engine is warm.
5. Loosen clamp on oil change tube; remove cap; drain oil.
6. Replace the cap and tube.
7. Refill with recommended oil for the season.

⚠ Overtightening can damage filter housing.

Tools: Filter wrench

1. Change the lube oil filter with every oil change.
2. Use a filter wrench to remove old filter.
3. Make sure old gasket is removed and discarded; clean mounting surface.
4. Spread thin film of engine oil on new filter gasket and screw on until gasket meets sealing surface.
5. Tighten one-half turn farther by hand only.
6. Fill engine with oil, start and check for leakage.
7. Stop engine, wait 3 minutes, check oil level, add oil if necessary.

⚠ Overtightening can damage the filter housing.

Tools: Filter wrench

1. Change the lube oil filter with every oil change.
2. Use a filter wrench to remove old filter and dispose of it properly.
3. Remove and discard the old gasket; clean mounting surface.
4. Spread a thin film of engine oil on the new filter gasket and screw it on.
5. Using hands only, tighten filter one-half turn farther.
6. Start engine and check for leakage; stop, wait 3 minutes and check oil level.

⚠ Do not overtighten.

Tools: Filter wrench

1. Change secondary fuel filter every 500 hours.
2. Fill new cartridge with fuel and apply engine oil to gasket surface.
3. Screw on until gasket contacts sealing surface of filter base.
4. Tighten two-thirds of a turn by hand.

1. Check tension and wear on the V-belt daily.
2. Press thumb on belt midpoint between crankshaft and alternator pulleys.
3. Tension is correct if belt depresses about 3/16 in. (5 mm).

1. Flush cooling system every 2500 hours or every 24 months, whichever comes first.
2. Remove expansion tank cap and drain engine block.
3. Open block drain cock and remove plug in lower left side of heat exchanger tank.
4. Pour clean water into expansion tank until water from drains is free of discoloration.
5. Let water drain completely, close drains and refill with recommended mixture.
6. Check hoses and connections and repair any leakage.
