Procedures

12
Adjust Valve Clearances adjustment

Tools: feeler gauge, wrench

  1. Adjust after head bolts are retightened; engine cold and not running.
  2. Turn engine by hand until valves rock, then one more full turn.
  3. Loosen lock nut and adjust clearance with adjustment screw.
  4. Set intake and exhaust clearance to 0.008 in (0.2 mm).
  5. Repeat for each cylinder; replace rocker arm cover.
  6. Tighten cover nuts to 5-8 ft/lb (0.8-2.3 kg/m).
Adjust valve clearance adjustment

Tools: feeler gauge, wrench

  1. Adjust after head bolts are retightened; engine cold and stopped.
  2. Turn engine by hand until valves rock.
  3. Turn crankshaft one more full turn.
  4. Loosen locknut and adjust clearance.
  5. Set both intake and exhaust to 0.008 in (0.2 mm).
  6. Repeat for each cylinder individually.
  7. Replace rocker arm cover; tighten nuts 5-8 ft/lbs.
Adjusting valve clearance adjustment
  1. Do adjustment after cylinder head bolts are tightened and engine is stopped.
  2. Turn engine by hand until inlet valve starts to open and exhaust valve starts to close.
  3. Turn crankshaft one more turn and adjust clearance for this cylinder.
  4. Loosen nut and adjust intake and exhaust valves with adjust screw.
  5. Adjust each set of valves individually.
  6. Replace rocker arm cover and tighten nuts evenly.
Retightening Cylinder Head Bolts adjustment

⚠ Tighten bolts when the engine is cold.

Tools: Torque wrench

  1. Retighten head bolts after the first 50 hours with the engine cold.
  2. Loosen the nuts and remove the rocker arm cover.
  3. Tighten head bolts with a torque wrench in the order shown, evenly in 2 or 3 passes.
  4. Finish at 33 - 36 ft/lbs (4.5 - 5 kg/m) on the final pass.
  5. Replace the rocker arm cover and tighten cover nuts to 5 - 8 ft/lbs (0.8 - 2.3 kg/m).
Valve Clearance Adjustment (SP6) adjustment

Tools: Feeler gauge, Wrench

  1. Adjust valve clearance after the first 50 hours and every 1000 hours thereafter, after head bolts are retightened.
  2. Engine must be cold and NOT running.
  3. Turn engine by hand until the inlet valve starts to open and exhaust valve starts to close (rocking).
  4. Turn the crankshaft one more full turn and adjust both valves for this cylinder.
  5. Loosen the lock nut and adjust clearance between rocker arm and valve guide with the adjustment screw.
  6. Set both intake and exhaust to 0.008 in. (0.2 mm); repeat for each cylinder.
  7. Replace the rocker arm cover and tighten cover nuts to 5 - 8 ft/lbs (0.8 - 2.3 kg/m).
Glow Plug Test diagnostic

Tools: D.C. test bulb

  1. Loosen the current carrying flat wire between the plus-poles of the glow plugs.
  2. Connect a D.C. test bulb between the plus-pole of the battery and the plus-pole of the glow plug.
  3. If the bulb lights up, the glow plug is functioning properly.
  4. Check all glow plugs and replace any faulty ones.
Glowplug check diagnostic

⚠ Do not hold pre-heat switch on over 30 seconds; glowplugs may burn out.

Tools: Test bulb

  1. Loosen current-carrying flat wire between plug poles of glowplugs.
  2. Connect a bulb between plus-pole of battery and plus-pole of glowplug.
  3. If bulb lights up, glowplug is functioning.
  4. Check all glowplugs and replace faulty ones.
Air Cleaner Service (SP4) maintenance

⚠ Do NOT run the engine with the air cleaner removed.

  1. Inspect air cleaner every 250 hours; check more often in dusty conditions.
  2. Marine sets: if dirty, wash element in soapy water, rinse and dry thoroughly before reinstalling; replace if necessary.
  3. Industrial sets: element cannot be cleaned; replace it when necessary.
  4. Make sure no impurities enter the engine while changing the element.
Air cleaner service maintenance

⚠ Make absolutely sure no impurities enter the engine.

  1. Remove cleaner by unscrewing center cap screw.
  2. Wipe inside of filter housing.
  3. Discard old cleaner if necessary and replace with new.
  4. New style: wash in cleaning solvent or soap and water.
  5. Make sure screen is in place before reinserting.
  6. Reinstall foam filter only when completely dry.
Battery Care (SP18-19) maintenance

⚠ Battery gas can explode; keep all flames and sparks away from batteries.

Tools: Hydrometer

  1. Check electrolyte level daily and add distilled water to the manufacturer's recommended level.
  2. Check and clean batteries, cables and terminals every 100 hours.
  3. Clean corrosion with a water and baking soda solution, flush with clean water, tighten and grease terminals.
  4. Check battery condition with a hydrometer every 250 hours.
Bleed fuel system maintenance

⚠ Fuel under pressure can penetrate skin.

Tools: wrench, cardboard

  1. Loosen bleed bolt A on top of filter.
  2. Pump hand primer B until pure fuel escapes.
  3. Tighten bleed screw A.
  4. Loosen bleed screw C; pump until pure fuel escapes.
  5. Tighten bleed screw C.
  6. If engine will not start, loosen one injector line.
  7. Crank until pure fuel escapes; tighten line.
  8. Repeat each line one at a time; check for leaks.
Bleeding the Fuel System (SP10) maintenance

⚠ Escaping diesel fuel under pressure can penetrate skin causing serious personal injury; relieve pressure before disconnecting lines.

⚠ Use cardboard or wood, not hands, to search for leaks.

Tools: Wrenches, Cardboard

  1. Loosen bleed bolt A on top of the filter and pump hand primer B until pure fuel escapes; tighten A.
  2. Loosen bleed screw C and pump hand primer B until pure fuel escapes; tighten C.
  3. If engine does not start, loosen a fuel line at the injector and crank until pure fuel escapes; tighten.
  4. Do each line one at a time.
