Procedures
7Fan belt deflection check and adjustment adjustment
- Measure belt deflection by applying 10 kgf (22 lbf) [98 N] force midway between alternator pulley and crankshaft pulley.
- If deflection is not correct, loosen the adjusting bolt and move the alternator to obtain required belt deflection.
Fuel injection timing inspection and adjustment adjustment
⚠ Fuel will come from the injection pipe with high pressure if engine is equipped with an electric fuel pump.
- Close fuel filter valve; disconnect No. 1 fuel injection pipe from cylinder head and injection pump.
- Remove No. 1 delivery valve holder, delivery valve and spring; restore holder only.
- Connect fuel injection pipe to injection pump; hold speed control lever in low speed position.
- Open fuel filter valve; turn starter switch key ON and slowly turn crankshaft clockwise.
- Fuel injection timing is correct if IT mark on crankshaft pulley aligns with mark on timing gear case when fuel stops.
- If timing is incorrect, change thickness of shims under fuel injection pump.
- Increase shim thickness to retard timing or decrease it to advance the timing.
- Restore delivery valve and injection pipe; apply sealant to both faces of each shim.
Idle RPM setting adjustment
⚠ Make sure valve clearance and injection timing are correct and injection nozzles have no defect.
- Start and run engine at low idle until coolant temperature is above 60°C (140°F).
- Loosen lock nut for idling set bolt and turn set bolt to obtain specified low idle rpm; tighten lock nut.
- Loosen lock nut for high-idle set bolt and turn set bolt to obtain specified high idle rpm; tighten lock nut.
Valve clearance adjustment adjustment
⚠ Make an adjustment to the valve clearance when the engine is cold.
⚠ After adjusting all cylinders, turn crankshaft two or three times and re-check valve clearance.
Tools: feeler gauge
- Slightly loosen cylinder head bolts and retighten to specified torque in number sequence.
- Find TDC compression position for No. 1 piston using the TDC mark on the crankshaft pulley.
- Loosen lock nut for adjusting screw; insert feeler gauge between rocker arm and valve cap.
- Adjust valve clearance by turning adjusting screw; hold screw and tighten lock nut.
- Turn crankshaft 180° and adjust remaining cylinders in firing order.
Compression pressure measurement diagnostic
⚠ Be sure to measure the compression pressure on all cylinders.
⚠ Check engine rpm at the time of measuring the compression pressure.
Tools: Compression gauge and adaptor ST332270
- Check crankcase oil level is correct and air cleaner, starter and battery are normal.
- Bring engine to normal operating temperature.
- Move control lever to a position for shutting off fuel supply.
- Remove all glow plugs; install compression gauge and adaptor (ST332270) to the cylinder to be measured.
- Turn engine with starter and read gauge pressure at the instant the gauge pointer stops.
- If reading is below the limit, overhaul the engine.
Fuel system priming maintenance
⚠ Turn valve lever to OPEN position before loosening any air vent screw.
- Move fuel filter valve lever to AIR position (filter with [AIR] valve).
- Move lever to ON position when fuel flows free of bubbles from the overflow pipe.
- Loosen air vent screw of the injection pump to prime fuel pipe and injection pump.
- Injection pipes and nozzles can be primed by cranking the engine.
Oil and oil filter change maintenance
⚠ Do not cause damage to the O-ring when installing the filter.
Tools: filter wrench
- Warm up engine; remove drain plug and drain oil into a container.
- Remove used filter with a filter wrench; remove old O-ring from filter base and clean base.
- Check new filter O-ring is in groove; apply thin coat of lube oil to O-ring.
- Install new filter by hand until O-ring touches base; tighten 3/4 to 1 turn more.
- Install drain plug and tighten to specified torque.
- Refill engine to H mark on dipstick; approximately 0.5 l extra required for filter and lines.
- Start engine, idle a few minutes and check for leaks; re-tighten filter if leaking.
- Stop engine, check oil level and add oil if necessary.
