Mitsubishi Serial & Model Number Guide

Every Mitsubishi engine carries a model/serial label. Here is where to find it, what each part of the number means, and how to use it for parts, service and age.

Where to find it: the nameplate attached to the engine (commonly the right or left front side), which shows the model and serial number together, e.g. "Model Serial number: S16R * 10012", per Mitsubishi's own service manual.

What the number means

Worked example — S16R-PTA:

Part	Meaning	Detail
`S`	Plant code	Sagamihara Machinery Works — Mitsubishi Heavy Industries' diesel-engine plant — per the service manual's own model-code diagram.
`16`	Number-of-cylinders code	Cylinder-count position in the model string.
`R`	Series code	Series-identifying letter (the manual's diagram confirms this position exists and labels it "Series code" without further per-letter definition).
`P`	Application code	No code = construction-equipment drive; P = generator drive and prime power; L = locomotive drive; MP = marine generator drive and marine general mechanical drive; M = marine propulsion.
`TA`	Turbo code	T = turbocharged; TA = turbocharged, aftercooled; TK = turbocharged, intercooled.

Using the serial number

Real-world nameplates sometimes carry further suffix letters not defined in this source (e.g. the "2" and "W" in S16R2-PTAW, or "Y2" in S12R-Y2PTAW) — treat those as an undecoded generation/variant marker rather than guessing at their meaning. No public serial-to-build-date formula was found.
