For the Mitsubishi S3L2 / S4L2, from the Mitsubishi service manual.

Applies to: Mitsubishi S3L2, Mitsubishi S4L2

Before you start

  • Fuel will come from the injection pipe with high pressure if engine is equipped with an electric fuel pump.

Procedure

  1. Close fuel filter valve; disconnect No. 1 fuel injection pipe from cylinder head and injection pump.
  2. Remove No. 1 delivery valve holder, delivery valve and spring; restore holder only.
  3. Connect fuel injection pipe to injection pump; hold speed control lever in low speed position.
  4. Open fuel filter valve; turn starter switch key ON and slowly turn crankshaft clockwise.
  5. Fuel injection timing is correct if IT mark on crankshaft pulley aligns with mark on timing gear case when fuel stops.
  6. If timing is incorrect, change thickness of shims under fuel injection pump.
  7. Increase shim thickness to retard timing or decrease it to advance the timing.
  8. Restore delivery valve and injection pipe; apply sealant to both faces of each shim.

Specs & values

  • Fuel injection timing (BTDC): 17° (standard)
  • A 0.1 mm (0.004 in.) change in shim thickness varies timing by 1°
  • Shims available: 0.2, 0.3, 0.4 and 0.8 mm
