Procedures

12
Test 20 - Check Spark Plugs / Test 23 - Check Valve Adjustment adjustment

Tools: feeler gauge, crow foot wrench

  1. Adjust valve clearance with engine at room temperature
  2. Position piston at TDC of compression stroke (both valves closed), or set intake/exhaust valve fully open method
  3. Loosen rocker arm jam nut; turn pivot ball stud while checking clearance with a feeler gauge
  4. When clearance is correct, hold pivot ball stud and tighten rocker arm jam nut to specified torque with a crow foot wrench
  5. Recheck valve clearance to make sure it did not change
  6. Install rocker arm cover with a new gasket
Test 27 - Check / Adjust Governor adjustment

Tools: AC frequency meter

  1. Loosen governor clamp bolt
  2. Hold governor lever at wide open throttle position
  3. Rotate governor shaft counterclockwise (389/208/196cc) or clockwise (410cc) as far as it will go
  4. Tighten governor lever clamp bolt to 110 in-lbs (389/208/196cc) or 70 in-lbs (410cc)
  5. Turn speed adjustment screw counterclockwise three full turns to avoid overspeed
  6. Start engine and let warm up under no-load
  7. Connect AC frequency meter; no-load frequency should be 62.0-62.5 hertz
  8. Turn speed adjust screw until frequency/RPM is within limits
  9. Apply removable Loctite (Loctite 241) to speed adjust screw threads
Test 41 - CO Module Verification Test diagnostic

⚠ Do NOT insert the drill bit into the LED holes; damage to the LEDs will occur

Tools: 3/64 inch drill bit

  1. Do not install CO badging (decal) prior to performing this test
  2. Run generator under normal operation with no CO module notifications for a minimum of 65 seconds
  3. With generator running, insert blunt end of a 3/64 inch drill bit into test switch hole
  4. Hold the drill bit against the mounting panel until notification LEDs appear and generator shuts off
  5. Successful pin test shows both LEDs on solid (not blinking)
Remove Contents from Carton installation
  1. Open carton completely by cutting each corner from top to bottom.
  2. Remove and verify carton contents prior to assembly.
  3. Call Generac Customer Service with unit model and serial number for any missing carton contents.
  4. Record model, serial number, and date of purchase on front cover of this manual.
Add Engine Oil maintenance

⚠ Engine damage. Verify proper type and quantity of engine oil prior to starting engine.

Tools: funnel

  1. Place generator on a level surface.
  2. Remove screws and side cover.
  3. Remove oil fill cap/dipstick and wipe dipstick clean.
  4. Insert funnel into oil fill opening and add recommended engine oil.
  5. Insert dipstick without screwing it in; verify oil level is within safe operating range.
  6. Install oil fill cap/dipstick and hand-tighten.
  7. Install side panel and screws.
Change Engine Oil maintenance

⚠ Risk of burns. Allow engine to cool before draining oil or coolant.

⚠ Accidental start-up. Disconnect spark plug wires when working on unit.

Tools: funnel, container

  1. Place generator on a level surface.
  2. Remove screws, side cover and spark plug cover.
  3. Disconnect the spark plug wire and place where it cannot contact spark plug.
  4. Clean area around oil fill and oil drain plug.
  5. Remove oil fill cap/dipstick and wipe dipstick clean.
  6. Tip unit and drain oil completely into a suitable container.
  7. Install oil drain plug and tighten securely.
  8. Insert funnel and add recommended engine oil.
  9. Verify oil level is within safe operating range.
  10. Install oil fill cap/dipstick and hand-tighten.
  11. Wipe up any spilled oil.
  12. Install side panel, screws, and spark plug cover.
  13. Properly dispose of oil in accordance with all applicable regulations.
Inspect Spark Arrestor Screen maintenance

⚠ Hot Surfaces. Do not touch hot surfaces. Keep machine away from combustibles during use.

  1. Remove the clamp to remove retainer.
  2. Slide spark arrestor screens out from the muffler outlet tube.
  3. Inspect screens and replace if torn, perforated or otherwise damaged; clean with a commercial solvent if not damaged.
  4. Replace the screens, retainer, and secure with clamp.
Prepare Fuel System/Engine for Storage maintenance

⚠ Vision Loss. Eye protection is required to avoid spray from spark plug hole when cranking engine.

  1. Loosen screw (A) and drain fuel from carburetor.
  2. Change engine oil.
  3. Remove spark plug.
  4. Pour tablespoon (5-10cc) of clean engine oil or spray a suitable fogging agent into cylinder.
  5. Pull starter recoil several times to distribute oil in cylinder.
  6. Install spark plug.
  7. Pull recoil slowly until resistance is felt to close valves; gently release recoil.
Service Air Filter maintenance
  1. Unscrew bolt (A) and remove air filter cover.
  2. Wash filter (B) in soapy water.
  3. Squeeze dry in clean cloth (DO NOT TWIST).
  4. Clean air filter cover before installation.
  5. Replace side cover and screws.
Service Spark Plug maintenance

Tools: feeler gauge, spark plug wrench

  1. Remove spark plug cover and disconnect spark plug wire.
  2. Clean area around spark plug.
  3. Remove and inspect spark plug.
  4. Inspect electrode gap with feeler gauge and reset spark plug gap to 0.6 - 0.7 mm (0.024 - 0.028 in).
  5. Install spark plug finger tight, and tighten an additional 3/8 to 1/2 turn using spark plug wrench.
Generator Shut Down operation

⚠ Equipment and property damage. Disconnect electrical loads prior to starting or stopping unit.
