Procedures

12
Connect starter battery installation

⚠ Disconnect negative terminal first; observe correct polarity.

  1. Install separate starter battery near generator.
  2. Connect positive cable to starter solenoid.
  3. Connect negative cable to engine foot.
  4. Install fuse and battery circuit breaker in positive cable within 300 mm of battery.
  5. Confirm battery voltage matches start system (12 V or 24 V).
First filling and ventilation of the internal cooling water circuit installation

⚠ Risk of scalding; expansion tank pressure relief valve 500 mbar.

  1. Fill external cooling water expansion tank with coolant to max marking; open cover temporarily.
  2. Start water pump using Prime Fuel option in iControl panel.
  3. Open venting screw at thermostat housing; close when air-free water comes out.
  4. Start generator; do not load; switch off after approx. 10 seconds.
  5. Repeat steps 1-4 until no more air comes out; close venting screws.
  6. Run generator at idle until cooling water temperature at engine reaches 60°C; stop; fill expansion tank to max; close.
  7. Re-ventilate 10 operating hours after first start-up and if necessary.
Isolation test installation

Tools: Voltmeter

  1. Switch off all electrical load.
  2. Start generator.
  3. Measure AC voltage with voltmeter between generator housing and AC-Control box, and generator housing and ground.
  4. Measured voltage must not exceed 50 mV.
  5. Check safety systems; test RCD if installed; check phases against each other and ground.
Perform isolation test installation

⚠ Only electrician may perform electrical connection work.

Tools: Voltmeter

  1. Switch off all electrical loads.
  2. Start generator.
  3. Measure AC voltage between generator housing and AC control box.
  4. Measure between generator housing and ground.
  5. Measured voltage must not exceed 50 mV.
  6. Test RCD and phase-to-phase/ground connections if installed.
Vent cooling water circuit at first filling installation

⚠ Risk of scalding; hot coolant may escape.

Tools: Protective clothing

  1. Fill external expansion tank to max marking.
  2. Open venting screw at thermostat housing.
  3. Start electric water pump using Prime Fuel.
  4. Close vent screw when air-free water emerges.
  5. Start generator unloaded for about 10 seconds; stop.
  6. Repeat steps until no air emerges.
  7. Run at idle until engine coolant reaches 60 °C.
  8. Fill expansion tank to max and close.
Change engine oil and oil filter maintenance

⚠ Burn hazard; used oil is toxic; dispose properly.

Tools: 17 mm open-ended wrench, Oil filter wrench, Container, Paper towels

  1. Run engine until 60 °C; secure against start.
  2. Open casing and place oil-resistant mat and container.
  3. Loosen oil filler cap and open oil drain screw with 17 mm wrench.
  4. Drain all oil.
  5. Remove old oil filter with filter wrench.
  6. Clean filter holder; oil new filter seal; screw on by hand.
  7. Refit drain screw with new seal; fill engine oil.
  8. Run 10 min, stop, recheck oil level.
Check engine oil level maintenance

⚠ Burn hazard: engine oil may be hot.

Tools: Paper towels/cloth

  1. Place generator level; secure against accidental start.
  2. Open casing and unscrew oil dipstick.
  3. Clean dipstick and reinsert without screwing in; wait 10 seconds.
  4. Pull out and read oil level.
  5. Refill if below 50%; recommended level 90%.
  6. Screw dipstick back and close casing.
Checking oil-level maintenance

⚠ Burn hazard; generator, coolant and engine oil can be hot.

Tools: paper towels / cloth

  1. Place generator level; with marine generators measure when ship is not lop-sided.
  2. Assure generator against accidental start.
  3. Open generator casing.
  4. Screw oil dipstick out of the check rail.
  5. Clean oil dipstick.
  6. Put dipstick back into check rail, do not screw in, wait 10 seconds.
  7. Pull dipstick out and read oil-level at lower end.
  8. Recommended oil-level 90%; refill if under 50%; under MIN check operating hours.
Clean PMGi heat sink and fan maintenance

⚠ Do not cover air holes and grille.

Tools: Compressed air

  1. Visual inspect heat sink and fan every 6 months.
  2. Clean with compressed air.
  3. At every generator service, trained person cleans fan.
De-aerating the fuel system maintenance

Tools: Container

  1. Put a container under the fuel return pipe.
  2. Switch the panel ON.
  3. Activate the fuel pump prime function in the panel menu.
  4. Let pump run until fuel runs bleed-free out of return line; about three activations.
  5. Switch the panel OFF.
Exchange of the Fuel Filter maintenance
  1. Clamp inlet before exchanging the filter.
  2. Remove hoses from used filter.
  3. Fasten hoses to new filter; observe arrow direction.
  4. Check for leaks.
Refilling oil maintenance

Tools: Engine oil

  1. Check oil-level as described.
  2. Pull oil dipstick out of check rail.
  3. Open oil filler cap.
  4. Fill in approx. 0.1 litre and wait about 2 min so it can flow into oil pan.
  5. Wipe oil dipstick and put it into check rail.
  6. Pull dipstick out and check oil-level.
  7. Repeat steps 4-6 if oil-level is still under 2/3.
