Common problems

Generator set stops suddenly
Cause: Low oil pressure shutdown
Fix: Check for oil leaks. Check the oil level and add oil if necessary
The generator set cranks but does not start, starts hard, lacks power, or operates erratically
Cause: Air cleaner clogged
Fix: Clean and/or replace the air cleaner
The generator set does not crank
Cause: Battery weak or dead
Fix: Recharge or replace the battery. Make sure that the AC power to the generator set controller is backed up by the generator set
No AC output
Cause: Line circuit breaker in the OFF position
Fix: Place the circuit breaker in the ON position
Engine hunting (20 kW models)
Cause: Controller firmware not the latest version
Fix: Verify that the RDC2.4 controller has the latest version of firmware, and update the controller firmware if necessary.
Low output or excessive drop in voltage
Cause: Generator set overloaded
Fix: Reduce the load by unplugging non-essential appliances
Lacks power
Cause: Air intake restriction, inadequate cooling
Fix: Inspect air intakes and exhaust for obstructions. Check air cleaner. Clear air intakes and exhaust area. Maintain clearances shown on the genset dimension drawing. Replace air cleaner element

Fix: Verify that manual fuel valve is open. Check fuel supply tank (LP). Open (turn on) manual fuel valve. Contact fuel supplier to add fuel to fuel supply tank (LP)

Cause: Low battery voltage
Fix: Check battery voltage during cranking. Check battery charger connections and utility power connection to the generator set. Charge battery. Replace battery if necessary. Tighten loose connections

Fix: Check for AC voltage on the generator side of circuit breaker. If there is AC voltage on the generator side of the breaker, then a problem in the load circuits is causing the line circuit breaker to trip. Check for and correct short circuits or overloading on the load side before resetting the circuit breaker

Fix: Check for reversed or poor battery connections; Correct and tighten battery connections

Attach frequency meter to AC output leads or load-side outlet.
Start and run generator at least 10 minutes to normal operating temperature.
Adjust engine governor speed (parameter 4P) to 60 Hz or 50 Hz as appropriate.
With no load, adjust governor gain (parameter 5P) until stable with no hunting or surging.
Check frequency; repeat steps 3 and 4 if necessary.
Save settings.

Fuel Conversion, 14RES/RESL (NG to LP) adjustment

Remove plug from LP port.

Disconnect DSAI leads for LP near fuel solenoid valve.

Fuel Selection, Revised Fuel System adjustment

Press the OFF button on the generator set controller.
Disconnect utility power to the generator set.
Disconnect the engine starting battery, negative lead first.
Turn off the fuel supply.
For natural gas, turn the selection knob fully clockwise to line up with the UP arrow.
For LPG, turn the selection knob counterclockwise approximately 1/4 turn.
Locate ignition timing leads 65 and N3 near the regulator.
For natural gas, connect lead 65 to lead N3.
For LPG, disconnect lead 65 from lead N3.
Connect and turn on the fuel supply matching the fuel setting.
Reconnect the engine starting battery, negative lead last.
Reconnect utility power.
Change the fuel type setting on the RDC2 controller in the Genset System menu.
Start the generator set by pressing RUN.
Check for leaks with a gas leak detector, run the set, and press OFF to shut down.
