  • Warning tag attached to the engine start switch or controls
    Fix: Do NOT start the engine or move the controls. Consult with the person that attached the warning tag before starting.
  • Loose or frayed electrical wires
    Fix: Check daily and tighten loose wires, repair frayed wires before starting the engine. See specific starting instructions in the Operation and Maintenance Manual.
  • Improper grounding of the engine electrical system
    Fix: Proper grounding is necessary for optimum performance and reliability. Use an engine-to-frame ground strap with a direct path to the battery. Ensure all grounds are tight and free of corrosion.
  • Engine shutdown due to certain conditions
    Fix: The engine may shut down if it experiences: Engine overspeed, high aftercooler coolant temperature, high jacket water temperature, high crankcase pressure, or low engine oil pressure. Except for an overspeed shutdown, the monitoring system can be overridden.
  • Engine overheating or accelerated wear
    Fix: Stop the engine according to the procedure described in the Operation and Maintenance Manual, 'Engine Stopping' topic (Operation Section). Do not use the Emergency Stop Button for normal stopping. Correct any problem that caused an emergency stop before restarting.
  • Engine exhaust in an enclosed area
    Fix: Start the engine and operate it in a well ventilated area. Vent the engine exhaust to the outside if started in an enclosed area.

Belts - Adjusting the Alternator Belt adjustment
  1. Remove the drive belt guard.
  2. Loosen mounting bolt (1), adjusting nuts (2) and mounting bolt (3).
  3. Turn adjusting nuts (2) to increase or decrease drive belt tension.
  4. Tighten adjusting nuts (2), mounting bolt (3), and mounting bolt (1).
  5. Reinstall the drive belt guard.
  6. If new belts installed, recheck tension after 30 minutes at rated rpm.
Belts - Inspect/Adjust/Replace adjustment

⚠ Slippage of loose belts can reduce efficiency of driven components

⚠ Too tight belts place unnecessary stress on components

  1. Remove the drive belt guard.
  2. Loosen mounting bolt, adjusting nuts and mounting bolt.

Air Shutoff - Test diagnostic

⚠ Do not start the engine during the test

⚠ Ensure the engine control is in the OFF position

  1. Ensure both air shutoff gates are latched OPEN and both switches connected.
  2. With power ON, activate EMERGENCY STOP; both gates should close.
  3. Latch only the right side gate; power ON; right gate should close.
  4. Latch only the left side gate; power ON; left gate should close.
  5. Reset both air shutoffs and operate the engine normally.
Air Shutoff - Test (ADEM II Engine Control Modules) diagnostic

⚠ Check the wiring for the air shutoff switches, and for the solenoids

  1. Do not start the engine; ensure engine control is OFF.
  2. Verify both air shutoff gates latched OPEN and switches connected.
  3. Turn panel power ON; gates should remain open.
  4. Activate EMERGENCY STOP; both gates should close.
  5. Reset; latch only right gate; power ON; right gate should close.
  6. Latch only left gate; power ON; left gate should close.
  7. Operate engine normally; ensure gates remain latched.
Generator Winding Insulation - Test diagnostic

  1. Take the generator out of service.
  2. Visually inspect generator for moisture. If moisture exists, dry the unit first.
  3. Inspect installation. Determine equipment that will be tested.
  4. Discharge capacitance of the windings. Disconnect 'T0' from ground.
  5. Disconnect sensing lead wires for regulator and PT leads of load share module.
  6. Connect insulation tester Black lead to ground; RED lead to 'T0'.
  7. Set voltage to rated voltage. Apply voltage; observe readings at 30 and 60 seconds.
  8. Record 60 second reading (correct for temperature), temperature, and humidity.
Overhaul Considerations diagnostic
  1. Use total fuel consumption as the most important factor for estimating the overhaul interval.
  2. Estimate the hours until overhaul using the equation H = F/R.
  3. If actual fuel consumption records are not available, estimate the average percent of load and use the engine spec sheet.
  4. Monitor oil consumption; when it has risen to three times the original rate, schedule an engine overhaul.
  5. Monitor noise, vibration, oil consumption, and crankcase blowby.
  6. Consult your Caterpillar dealer about scheduling a major overhaul.
Actuator Control Linkage - Lubricate maintenance

  1. Apply grease to the grease fittings with a hand grease gun using MPGM.
  2. Stop the engine.
  3. Move the linkage by hand.
  4. If the linkage binds, repair the linkage.
Aftercooler Core - Inspect/Clean maintenance

  3. Back flush the core with cleaner.
  4. Remove the drain plug.
  5. Steam clean the core and flush the fins.
  6. Wash the core with hot, soapy water.
  7. Flush the core with clean, fresh water until clear.
  8. Dry the core with compressed air in the reverse direction of normal flow.
  9. Inspect O-rings or seals; replace if damaged.
  10. Inspect for trapped debris; repeat cleaning if needed.
  11. Inspect for damage and pressure test to detect leaks.
  12. Install the core.
Air Starting Motor Lubricator Bowl - Clean maintenance
  1. Ensure that the air supply to the lubricator is OFF.
  2. Open the drain and drain the oil into a suitable container. Dispose of the used oil.
  3. Remove the bowl. Clean the bowl with warm water.
  4. Dry the bowl. Inspect for cracks; replace if cracked.
  5. Install the bowl. Close the drain.
  6. Remove the plug. Fill the bowl with oil. Install the oil filler plug.
  7. If necessary, adjust the lubricator to release two drops of oil per 30 seconds.
Air Starting Motor Lubricator Oil Level - Check maintenance

⚠ Never allow the lubricator bowl to become empty

⚠ Do not disconnect or remove hoses or fittings until all pressure has been relieved

  1. Observe the oil level in the sight gauge; if less than 1/2, add oil.
  2. Ensure the air supply to the lubricator is OFF.
  3. Slowly loosen the filler plug to release pressure from the lubricator bowl.
  4. Remove the filler plug and pour oil into the lubricator bowl.
  5. Install the filler plug.
