⚠ Must be performed with engine cold

Tools: feeler gauge

1. Remove rocker arm cover and gasket (replace if torn)
2. Remove spark plug to allow engine rotation
3. Rotate engine to TDC of compression stroke
4. Confirm both rocker arms loose at TDC; rotate 360 deg if not
5. Insert feeler gauge between rocker arm and push rod, check clearance per Table 3
6. If adjustment required, hold adjusting nut and loosen jam nut
7. Turn adjusting nut to obtain correct valve lash
8. Tighten jam nut to 106 in-lb (12 N-m) while holding adjusting nut
9. Recheck valve lash after tightening jam nut
10. Repeat for both intake and exhaust valves
11. Install rocker arm cover, gasket, and spark plug

⚠ Never dispose of used oil into sewer, ground, or waterways

Tools: oil pan

1. Operate/maintain generator on a flat surface and stop the engine
2. Let engine cool several minutes to equalize crankcase pressure
3. Place oil pan under oil drain plug
4. Clean around oil drain plug with damp rag
5. Remove oil drain plug and set aside on clean surface
6. Allow oil to completely drain
7. Replace oil drain plug
8. Fill crankcase with oil per Adding Engine Oil procedure

⚠ Removing dipstick while engine is hot can cause hot oil to spray out and burn skin

1. Operate/maintain generator on a flat surface; stop engine if running
2. Let engine cool several minutes to equalize crankcase pressure
3. Clean around oil fill plug/dipstick with damp rag
4. Remove oil fill plug/dipstick
5. Thread dipstick fully back in, then remove and read oil level
6. Acceptable level is on the crosshatches between H and L lines

⚠ Never use gasoline or flammable solvents to clean the air filter

1. Turn off generator and let cool several minutes
2. Move generator to flat, level surface
3. Unclip air filter cover clips
4. Remove black coarse air filters
5. Wash foam elements in household detergent and warm water, squeezing gently
6. Rinse in clean water with slow squeezing action
7. Dispose of soap solution properly
8. Dry filter elements with slow firm squeezing
9. Coat dry filters with clean engine oil and squeeze out excess
10. Install gray (fine) filter first, then black (coarse) filter
11. Install air filter cover and secure assembly

⚠ Never apply side load when removing/installing spark plug

Tools: spark plug socket wrench

1. Stop generator and let cool; move to flat surface
2. Remove spark plug boot by pulling straight away from engine
3. Clean area around spark plug
4. Remove spark plug with socket wrench provided
5. Cover spark plug opening with clean rag
6. Inspect for cracked/chipped insulator, wear, and gap 0.027-0.032 in (0.70-0.80 mm)
7. Hand-thread spark plug back in until it bottoms out
8. Tighten with socket wrench to fully seat
9. Replace spark plug boot fully engaging tip

⚠ Gasoline stored 60+ days can go bad, causing gum/varnish/corrosive buildup

1. Switch Engine Switch to STOP so generator doesn't draw battery power
2. Clean the generator
3. Drain all gasoline from fuel tank as best as possible
4. With fuel shutoff valve open, run engine until remaining gasoline is consumed and engine shuts off
5. Close fuel shutoff valve
6. Drain remaining gas in carburetor float bowl
7. Change the oil
8. Remove spark plug, add about 1 tablespoon of oil into opening, pull recoil handle several times
9. Replace the spark plug
10. Move generator to clean, dry storage location

⚠ Dispose of used battery per local/state guidelines

1. Remove spark plug wire from spark plug
2. Loosen and remove bolt on battery hold-down plate; swing plate out
3. Tip battery forward slightly to access cables
4. Disconnect black negative cable first
5. Disconnect red positive cable second and remove battery
6. Install new battery matching spec table
7. Connect red positive cable first
8. Connect black negative cable second
9. Install battery hold-down plate with removed nuts
10. Install spark plug wire onto spark plug
