Procedures

5
Light Tower Set Up installation

⚠ Do not set up if high winds or lightning storms are expected

  1. Locate unit at ground level or higher than area to be illuminated.
  2. Place unit on firm, flat ground and block wheels.
  3. Pull locking pin, rotate tongue jack 90°, replace pin, raise tongue off tow vehicle.
  4. Connect earthen ground to grounding stud at base of mast post.
  5. Extend outriggers until locking pins snap into place; rotate outrigger jacks down.
  6. Rotate and lock rear jack; level trailer by turning all four jack handles clockwise.
  7. Adjust lamp aim by loosening trunnion wing nuts, then tighten and connect to junction box.
Lowering the Mast operation

⚠ Stop immediately if mast hangs up or winch cable develops slack

  1. Shut down lights and engine; allow lights to cool 10-15 minutes.
  2. Loosen mast rotation knob, align white arrows until stop tabs touch, tighten knob.
  3. Turn upper mast winch handle counterclockwise to collapse mast to lowest position.
  4. Release mast lock by pulling safety pin and lock bar; turn lower mast winch counterclockwise until mast rests in cradle.
  5. Insert mast cradle locking pin and secure with safety pin.
Raising the Mast operation

⚠ Never raise or lower mast while unit is operating

⚠ Never remove safety pin or release mast lock while mast is up

  1. Set up and level the unit with outriggers extended.
  2. Remove mast cradle locking pin.
  3. Check mast cables for wear/damage and check electrical cord for damage.
  4. Clear area around unit before raising mast to vertical.
  5. Remove safety pin from mast lock bar; use lower mast winch to raise mast until lock bar snaps into place; secure with safety pin.
  6. Use upper mast winch to telescope mast to desired height, not beyond the colored mark.
  7. Loosen mast rotation knob, rotate mast to desired direction, tighten knob.
Starting the Unit operation

⚠ Do not crank engine longer than 10 seconds at a time; wait 30 seconds between attempts

  1. Confirm main breaker and light circuit breakers are OFF.
  2. Turn key to Glow Plug position and hold 5 seconds, then turn to Start and hold until engine starts; release key to Run position.
  3. Allow engine to reach normal operating temperature before switching on loads.
Towing the Unit operation

⚠ Maximum highway towing speed 45 mph (72 km/h); off-road 10 mph (16 km/h) or less

  1. Raise rear jack and outrigger jacks fully into travel position; slide outriggers into frame.
  2. Use tongue jack to set trailer onto hitch; lock coupling and attach safety chains.
  3. Lubricate leveling jack grease fittings.
  4. Connect trailer wiring to tow vehicle; check stop and signal lights.
  5. Confirm mast cradle locking pin is in place and doors are latched.
  6. Check tire inflation and wheel lug torque per specification.

Symptoms & remedies

SymptomCauseRemedy
MAST LIGHTS OFF BUT BALLAST INDICATORS ON CONTROL PANEL ARE ONMast light is too hot. Allow light to cool 10-15 minutes before restarting. Faulty bulb connection. Check that the bulb is tight in the socket. Bulb broken. Check for broken arc tube or outer bulb jacket, broken or loose components in bulb envelope or blackening/deposits inside tube. Check the connections inside the mast junction box and each mast light housing/socket. Check the mast electrical cord for damage and check the cord connections inside the control box.
MAST LIGHTS OFF AND BALLAST INDICATORS ON CONTROL PANEL ARE OFFCheck the connections inside the control box and inside each ballast box. Generator output incorrect. Check the incoming voltage to the ballast by checking the available voltage on the duplex receptacle. Incoming voltage should be 120V +/- 5V. If voltage is incorrect engine speed may need to be adjusted or generator may require service. Contact Magnum Products Technical Service Department for more information. Low transformer output. The voltage from the transformer should read approximately 400 VAC as the light “strikes” (induces an arc), then drop and slowly rise back up to stabilize at 240-260 VAC. On quick disconnect models, measure across the junction box terminals when the light is unplugged. On hard wired models, remove the mast junction box cover and insert the wire probes into the connector blocks for the lights and ground. If proper voltage is not achieved, perform capacitor check to determine if the capacitor or coil needs to be replaced.
MAST LIGHTS ON BUT THE LIGHT OUTPUT IS LOWFixture or lens dirty. Clean reflective surface inside fixture and both inside and outside surface of glass lens. Bulb worn. Replace bulb due to normal use. Check the mast coil cord, mast junction box and mast light connections. Generator output incorrect. Check the incoming voltage to the ballast. Incoming voltage should be 120V +/- 5V. If voltage is incorrect engine speed may need to be adjusted or generator may require service. Low transformer output. Perform transformer check as described above.
Mast light is too hot.Allow light to cool 10-15 minutes before restarting.
Faulty bulb connection.Check that the bulb is tight in the socket.
Bulb broken.Check for broken arc tube or outer bulb jacket, broken or loose components in bulb envelope or blackening/deposits inside tube.
