Procedures
8Preparation for Start-Up installation
⚠ Ensure AUTO/OFF/MANUAL switch is in OFF position before working on the generator.
Tools: Manometer
- Ensure 120VAC circuit breaker to battery charger is open.
- Remove the fuse from the control panel (H-100/R-series: 15 Amp ATO fuse).
- Connect battery cables; attach negative cable last.
- Close 120VAC circuit breaker to the battery charger.
- Insert the fuse into the control panel.
- Move AUTO/OFF/MANUAL switch to MANUAL; engine should crank and start.
- Check voltage at generator terminals and check for leaks.
- Close generator main line circuit breaker; turn generator set off.
Reconfigure the Fuel System (NG to LP) installation
⚠ Make sure fuel supply is of proper pressure and type for configuration.
⚠ Keep ports free from debris during reconfiguration.
Tools: Pipe sealant
- Turn the main gas supply off.
- Remove carburetor fuel hose from outlet Port 1 of demand regulator.
- Remove brass hose fitting from Port 1.
- Remove pipe plug from Port 2.
- Install brass hose fitting into Port 2.
- Install pipe plug into Port 1.
- Connect carburetor gas hose to brass fitting; tighten all clamps and plugs.
- Set the Dip switch inside the control panel to LP or NG position.
Battery Maintenance maintenance
⚠ Do not use tap water in batteries.
⚠ Storage batteries give off explosive hydrogen gas.
⚠ Do not use jumper cables or a booster battery to crank the engine.
Tools: Automotive-type battery hydrometer
- Inspect battery posts and cables for tightness and corrosion; tighten and clean as necessary.
- Check battery fluid level of unsealed batteries; fill with DISTILLED WATER only if necessary.
- Have state of charge and condition checked with an automotive-type battery hydrometer.
Changing Engine Oil maintenance
⚠ Never operate engine with oil below the dipstick ADD mark.
⚠ Do not overtighten the oil filter.
Tools: Suitable container, Clean, lint-free cloth
- Remove OIL DRAIN HOSE from its retaining clip.
- Loosen and remove OIL DRAIN HOSE CAP; drain oil completely into suitable container.
- Install and tighten OIL DRAIN HOSE CAP; re-install into retaining clip.
- Turn OIL FILTER counterclockwise and remove; dispose of old filter.
- Apply light coating of new engine oil to seal of new filter; install and tighten by hand only.
- Remove OIL FILL CAP; add recommended oil. Do not fill above dipstick FULL mark.
- Start engine and check for oil leaks.
Changing the Engine Air Cleaner maintenance
- Remove the air cleaner cover.
- Replace the air filter, making sure it is positioned properly.
- Reattach the cover.
Spark Plugs - Inspect and Set Gap maintenance
⚠ Do not blast the spark plugs to clean.
Tools: Wire feeler gauge, Wire brush, Commercial solvent
- Clean area around base of spark plugs to keep dirt out.
- Remove spark plugs and check condition; replace if worn or reuse questionable.
- Check gap with a wire feeler gauge; adjust by carefully bending ground electrode.
Engine Start-up and Transfer (Manual Transfer Switch) operation
⚠ Do not crank the engine continuously for longer than 30 seconds.
⚠ Do not attempt manual operation until all power supplies to the transfer switch are positively turned off.
- Turn OFF or disconnect utility power circuit to the transfer switch.
- Set transfer handle to UTILITY (NORMAL) position.
- Set generator main line circuit breaker to OFF (or OPEN).
- Start the generator; let engine stabilize and warm up.
- Move transfer switch manual handle to STANDBY (GENERATOR) position.
- Set generator main line circuit breaker to ON (or CLOSED).
Retransfer and Shutdown operation
- Set generator main line circuit breaker to OFF (or OPEN).
- Move transfer switch handle to UTILITY (NORMAL) position.
- Turn ON the utility power supply to the transfer switch.
- Let generator run at no-load a few minutes to stabilize temperatures.
- Shut down the generator.
