Procedures

12
Fuel injection timing adjustment adjustment
  1. Bleed fuel line and set engine ready for starting.
  2. Align timing marks on fuel pump mounting flange and gear case.
  3. Set speed control lever at operating position.
  4. Disconnect No.1 injection pipe at fuel pump.
  5. Turn crankshaft clockwise and stop when fuel emerges.
  6. Turn crankshaft 20 degrees counter-clockwise, then clockwise to fuel emergence.
  7. Read timing scale on flywheel through flywheel housing hole.
  8. Loosen pump mounting nut and incline pump toward or away to adjust.
Intake/exhaust valve clearance adjustment adjustment

Tools: thickness gauge, wrench

  1. Remove rocker arm cover.
  2. Turn crankshaft to No.1 cylinder compression TDC.
  3. Measure clearance between rocker arm and valve cap with thickness gauge.
  4. Loosen lock nut and adjusting screw.
  5. Adjust to 0.15-0.25 mm using 0.2 mm thickness gauge.
  6. Tighten adjusting screw and lock nut.
  7. Adjust remaining cylinders in ignition order.
V-belt tension check and adjustment adjustment

Tools: thumb pressure 98 N

  1. Press V-belt midway with thumb approx. 98 N.
  2. Measure deflection at position A, B, or C.
  3. Compare with used/new V-belt deflection table.
  4. Loosen set bolt and move alternator to adjust tension.
  5. Tighten set bolt after adjustment.
  6. Run engine five minutes and readjust new belt.
  7. Visually check belt for cracks, oiliness, or wear; replace if needed.
Compression pressure measurement diagnostic

Tools: compression gage kit, compression gage adapter

  1. Warm engine, then remove fuel injection pipe and valves from cylinder.
  2. Crank engine with stop handle at stop position before installing adapter.
  3. Install compression gage adapter and gage with gasket.
  4. Crank with starter until gage reading stabilizes.
  5. Compare with standard: 2/3TNV70 3.24±0.1 MPa; 3TNV76 3.43±0.1 MPa.
Fuel injection nozzle pressure inspection diagnostic

⚠ Wear protective glasses when testing injection.

Tools: nozzle tester

  1. Connect fuel injection valve to nozzle tester high-pressure pipe.
  2. Operate tester lever slowly and read pressure at injection start.
  3. Compare opening pressure with 11.8-12.8 MPa.
  4. Replace pressure adjusting shim with thicker one if low.
  5. Check spray pattern and seat oil-tightness.
Thermostat inspection diagnostic

Tools: thermometer, container

  1. Place thermostat in container filled with water.
  2. Heat water while measuring temperature.
  3. Observe valve opening at 69.5-72.5 °C.
  4. Check full open lift is 8 mm or more at 85 °C.
  5. Replace thermostat if it does not actuate.
Air cleaner cleaning maintenance

⚠ Wear protective equipment such as goggles when blowing compressed air.

Tools: compressed air

  1. Undo latches on dust pan and remove dust pan.
  2. Pull out air cleaner element.
  3. Blow air 0.29-0.49 MPa from inside element.
  4. Replace element if damaged, excessively dirty, or oily.
  5. Clean inside of dust pan.
  6. Reinstall element and dust pan; fasten latches.
Bleeding the fuel system maintenance

⚠ Do not bleed using the starting motor.

Tools: screwdriver

  1. Check fuel tank level and refuel if insufficient.
  2. Open fuel cocks at water separator and fuel filter.
  3. Loosen air bleeding bolt 2-3 turns counter-clockwise with screwdriver.
  4. Operate priming pump or electromagnetic fuel feed pump.
  5. Continue until fuel is clear and free of bubbles.
  6. Tighten air bleeding bolt.
Cooling water replacement maintenance

⚠ Never open radiator filler cap while engine and radiator are hot.

  1. Remove radiator cap after engine cools.
  2. Loosen radiator drain plug and drain cooling water.
  3. Tighten drain plug after draining.
  4. Fill radiator with cooling water to filler port lip.
  5. Fill coolant recovery tank to FULL mark.
  6. Check radiator-to-recovery-tank hose for secure connection and damage.
Fuel filter element replacement maintenance
  1. Close fuel filter cock.
  2. Loosen retainer ring and remove fuel filter element.
  3. Install new fuel filter element.
  4. Tighten retainer ring to 13-16 N·m.
  5. Bleed fuel system.
Lube oil and filter replacement maintenance

⚠ Hot oil can cause burns.

Tools: wrench, filter wrench, socket wrench or closed wrench

  1. Run engine until lube oil is warm, then stop.
  2. Remove oil filler cap and drain lube oil through drain plug.
  3. Turn lube oil filter counter-clockwise with filter wrench to remove.
  4. Clean oil filter mounting face.
  5. Moisten new oil filter gasket with lube oil.
  6. Install filter until contact, then tighten 3/4 turn (20-24 N·m).
  7. Fill with specified lube oil to dipstick range.
  8. Run five minutes, check leaks, and recheck level after ten minutes.
Water separator draining maintenance
  1. Close fuel cock.
  2. Loosen retainer ring and remove cup.
  3. Discard collected water and trash.
  4. Reinstall float ring and spring in cup.
  5. Tighten retainer ring to 13-16 N·m.
