Procedures
11Assembly of Suction and Discharge Hoses installation
- Connect suction strainer to one end of reinforced hose and secure with clamp
- Insert smaller end of hose joint through larger end of coupling; connect other end of hose to hose joint and coupling; secure with clamp
- Place rubber seal at end of hose joint; attach hose joint to pump suction port; tighten coupling
- Repeat similarly for discharge hose at pump discharge port
Air Cleaner Service maintenance
⚠ Paper element cannot be blown out with compressed air
⚠ Operating with loose or damaged components can cause premature wear and failure
- Move bails on air cleaner cover down; remove latches from tabs on base; remove cover
- Remove precleaner from paper element
- Replace or wash precleaner in warm water with detergent; rinse and air dry
- Lightly oil precleaner with new engine oil; squeeze out excess
- Separate precleaner from element; service precleaner and replace paper element
- Install new paper element on base; reinstall precleaner over element
- Position cover for normal or cold-weather operation; secure with latches and bails
Change Oil maintenance
- Change oil while engine is warm
- Clean area around oil fill cap/dipstick and oil drain plug
- Remove oil drain plug and oil fill cap/dipstick; drain oil completely
- Reinstall oil drain plug; torque to 13 ft. lb. (17.6 N-m)
- Fill crankcase with new oil up to point of overflowing filler neck
- Reinstall oil fill cap/dipstick and tighten securely
- Dispose of used oil per local ordinances
Check Oil Level maintenance
⚠ Never run engine with oil level below or above the dipstick operating range
- Ensure engine is cool; clean dipstick area of debris
- Remove dipstick; wipe off oil
- Reinsert dipstick resting on fill neck without threading, or thread and remove to check level
- Level should be at top of indicator on dipstick, or up to overflowing point at fill plug
- Add oil if low, up to overflow point
- Reinstall dipstick or fill plug and tighten securely
Oil Change maintenance
- Change oil while engine is warm.
- Clean area around oil fill cap and oil drain plug.
- Remove oil drain plug and oil fill cap. Drain completely.
- Reinstall oil drain plug. Torque to 13 ft. lb.
- Fill crankcase with new oil to point of overflowing.
- Reinstall oil fill cap and tighten securely.
- Dispose of used oil in accordance with local ordinances.
Rinsing maintenance
⚠ Perform after pump has stopped and cooled down
- Fill pump body with clean water via discharge port or filler cap
- Slowly pull recoil starter handle several times until resistance is felt, then release gently
- Remove pump drain plug and allow water to flow out
- Reinstall pump drain plug
- Repeat if necessary
- Clean suction strainer, remove dirt, and rinse with clean water
Spark Plug Replacement maintenance
Tools: Wire feeler gauge, Spark plug socket, Torque wrench
- Clean out spark plug recess
- Remove spark plug
- Check gap using wire feeler gauge
- Adjust gap if needed per specification table
- Install plug into cylinder head
- Torque plug to 20 ft. lb.
Storage Procedure maintenance
⚠ Never operate pump without filling pump body with water and immersing suction strainer beforehand
- Add Kohler PRO Series fuel treatment or equivalent to fuel tank; run engine 2-3 minutes to stabilize fuel
- Change oil while engine is still warm; remove spark plug, pour about 1 oz. oil into cylinder, replace plug, crank slowly to distribute oil
- Rinse pump and pipes thoroughly with clean water
- Clean outside of pump; apply rust-prevention product to worn or damaged areas
- Cover pump with a protective cover and store in a clean, dry place
Starting operation
⚠ Carbon monoxide - use outdoors only
⚠ Rotating parts - stay away during operation
- Immerse suction strainer completely in the liquid to be pumped
- Fill pump body with water via discharge port or filler cap
- Connect discharge and suction couplings
- Turn fuel shut-off valve to ON (if equipped)
- Turn engine on/off switch to ON (if equipped)
- Cold engine: set throttle midway between SLOW and FAST; set choke to ON
- Warm engine: set throttle midway between SLOW and FAST; choke usually not required
- Slowly pull recoil starter handle until past compression, then firmly pull straight out
- Gradually return choke to OFF as engine warms up
Stopping operation
- Move throttle lever to slow/idle position; stop engine
- Pump stops
- Close fuel shut-off valve, if equipped
- Disconnect suction and discharge pipes and allow liquid to flow out
- Rinse pump if not used again same day
Fuel Valve Cleaning repair
Tools: wrench
- Remove two nuts, two screws, and carburetor cover panel
- Turn fuel valve lever to OFF
- Remove fuel valve cup, O-ring, and filter screen
- Clean screen and cup with solvent; wipe off
- Check screen and O-ring; replace if damaged
- Reinstall O-ring and cup finger tight, then 1/2 to 3/4 turn with wrench
- Turn fuel valve to ON and check for leaks; repeat steps 5-6 if leaking
- Tighten fuel cap securely
- Reinstall carburetor cover panel
