Change Engine Oil and Oil Filter maintenance

⚠ Dispose of used oil and filters per local environmental regulations

Tools: Collection container, Replacement oil filter, Oil filter wrench, Clean, dry cloth, Drop cloth

  1. Stop the engine and allow it to cool
  2. Place a drop cloth and collection container beneath the oil drain valve
  3. Open the oil drain valve and drain the oil into the container
  4. Remove the old oil filter with an oil filter wrench
  5. Wipe the filter installation surface clean and inspect for damage
  6. Apply a thin film of fresh oil to the new filter gasket
  7. Screw in the new filter by hand until resistance, then tighten an additional 3/4 turn
  8. Close the oil drain valve
  9. Add fresh oil through the oil fill cap
  10. Check the oil level is between Full and Add marks
  11. Install and tighten the oil fill cap
  12. Start and run the engine unloaded for about 5 minutes to distribute the oil
Check Coolant Level and Condition maintenance

⚠ Stop the engine and let it cool before removing the pressure cap

  1. Open the radiator cap slowly to release system pressure
  2. Maintain the coolant level in the overflow bottle between High and Low marks
  3. Install and tighten the radiator cap
  4. Replace the coolant if dirty, discolored, or fouled with oil or rust particles
Check Engine Oil maintenance

Tools: Clean, dry cloth

  1. Stop the engine and allow it to cool
  2. Pull out the oil dipstick
  3. Wipe the dipstick with a clean, dry cloth
  4. Insert the dipstick into the engine
  5. Pull out the dipstick again to check the oil level between Full and Add marks
  6. If below Add mark, check for leaks, then add oil to the Full mark through the oil fill cap
  7. Repair any oil leaks found before operating the engine
Check and Adjust the Drive Belt maintenance
  1. Stop the engine and allow it to cool
  2. Locate the drive belt
  3. Inspect for cracking, separation, cuts, or other damage
  4. Replace the drive belt if any abnormality is found
Check, Adjust and Replace the Spark Plugs maintenance

Tools: Spark plug wrench, Torque wrench, Spark plug gap tool, Clean, dry cloth

  1. Stop the engine and allow it to cool
  2. Label the spark plug wires, then wipe dirt and oil from around each of the four wires
  3. Disconnect the spark plug wires
  4. Remove the spark plugs with a spark plug wrench
  5. Inspect each spark plug body for cracks, damage, or discoloration and check the washer
  6. Inspect the electrodes; replace the plug if burned, sooted, or fouled with oil
  7. Measure and adjust the gap to specification with a gap tool
  8. Thread the spark plugs into the cylinder head
  9. Tighten the spark plugs to 27 Nm (20 ft. lb.)
  10. Reconnect the spark plug wires in the same order as removed
Long-Term Storage (More than 30 Days) maintenance
  1. Perform all short-term storage tasks
  2. Change the engine oil and filter, then remove the drive belt
  3. Disconnect spark plug wires and remove the spark plugs
  4. Squirt about 30 ml (1 oz.) of fresh oil into each cylinder
  5. Manually rotate the crankshaft 10-15 times to distribute the oil
  6. Reinstall the spark plugs and reconnect the wires
  7. Coat exposed metal parts and electrical connectors with protectant
Long-Term Storage Preparation maintenance
  1. Change the engine oil and filter.
  2. Remove the drive belt.
  3. Disconnect spark plug wires and remove spark plugs.
  4. Squirt approximately 30 ml (1 ounce) of fresh engine oil into each cylinder.
  5. Manually rotate the crankshaft 10-15 times.
  6. Install spark plugs and reconnect spark plug wires.
  7. Cover exposed metal parts with protectant.
  8. Coat electrical connectors with protectant.
Removal from Storage maintenance

⚠ The engine may smoke on first start after storage as it burns off protective cylinder oil; this is normal

  1. Remove protective cloths, covers, and caps
  2. Clean protectant from metal parts and electrical components
  3. Reinstall the drive belt and check fluid levels
  4. Connect the battery, fuel supply, and open fuel valves
  5. Start the engine and run several minutes unloaded, checking for leaks
  6. Check oil pressure and fuel pressure gauges for normal operation
Short-Term Storage (Less than 30 Days) maintenance
  1. Perform scheduled periodic maintenance tasks and needed repairs
  2. Close the fuel valves and disconnect the fuel supply
  3. Clean the outside of the engine and remove the starting key
  4. Disconnect and remove the battery
  5. Cover or cap all intake and exhaust ports, including fuel lines, air filter, and exhaust
  6. Cover the engine and store in a secure, dry location
Cold Weather Starting operation
  1. Make sure the engine oil is appropriate for the ambient temperature; drain and replace if necessary
  2. Disconnect all applied loads and equipment before cranking the starter
  3. Allow the engine to run unloaded for about 5 minutes after cold start
Stopping operation
  1. Disconnect all applied loads and PTO attachments before stopping the engine
  2. If running under heavy load, reduce speed and run 2-3 minutes to cool before stopping
Replace the Drive Belt repair

⚠ Do not install an old or worn replacement belt

Tools: Replacement drive belt, 14 mm socket and wrench

  1. Turn the tensioner pulley clockwise against spring force with a socket wrench
  2. With the tensioner disengaged, remove and discard the old drive belt, then release the tensioner
  3. Route the new drive belt per the routing diagram
  4. Turn the tensioner pulley clockwise again and slip the new belt on, then release the tensioner
  5. Verify the belt is aligned in the grooves of each pulley
