Procedures
12Check Belt Tensioner Spring Tension adjustment
Tools: Torque wrench, Long-handled 1/2 inch drive tool
- Release belt tension using long-handled 1/2 inch drive tool; remove belt from pulleys.
- Release tension on tensioner arm and remove drive tool.
- Put a mark on the swing arm of the tensioner.
- Measure 21 mm (0.83 in.) from the mark and put a second mark on the tensioner mounting base.
- Install torque wrench in square hole aligned with roller and tensioner centre.
- Rotate swing arm with torque wrench until marks are aligned.
- Record torque measurement and compare with specification.
- Replace tensioner assembly as required.
Check and Adjust Engine Valve Clearance adjustment
Tools: JDE83 or JDG820 Flywheel Turning Tool, Timing pin JDG1571, Feeler gauge, Screwdriver and wrench
- Remove rocker arm cover and crankcase vent tube.
- Rotate flywheel until No. 1 piston is at TDC compression stroke; insert timing pin.
- Check and adjust valve clearance to specification.
- Loosen locknut on rocker arm adjusting screw; turn screw until feeler gauge slips with slight drag.
- Hold adjusting screw and tighten locknut to 27 N·m (20 lb.-ft.).
- Recheck clearance after tightening locknut.
- Rotate flywheel 360 degrees and adjust remaining valves per firing order.
- Reinstall rocker arm cover and crankcase vent tube.
Bleed the Fuel System maintenance
⚠ High-pressure fluid remaining in fuel lines can cause serious injury; do not disconnect HPCR lines.
Tools: Two open-end wrenches
- Loosen air bleed screw two full turns.
- Operate fuel pump primer lever until fuel flow is free from air bubbles.
- Tighten bleed screw securely; continue operating primer until pumping action is not felt.
- Start engine and check for leaks.
- If needed, loosen fuel return line at injection pump and prime until bubble-free; tighten.
- At injection nozzles, loosen line and crank engine until bubble-free fuel flows; retighten to 27 N·m (20 lb.-ft.).
- Repeat for remaining injection nozzles.
- If engine still will not start, contact authorized servicing dealer.
Change Engine Oil and Filter maintenance
⚠ DO NOT overtighten oil filter.
Tools: Suitable filter wrench, Clean rag
- Run engine approximately 5 minutes to warm oil; shut off.
- Open oil pan drain valve and drain crankcase oil while warm.
- Remove and discard oil filter element using a filter wrench.
- Apply clean engine oil to inner and outer seals and filter threads.
- Wipe sealing surfaces; install filter by hand until tight against dust seal.
- Close oil pan drain valve.
- Fill crankcase with correct John Deere engine oil; do not overfill.
- Start engine, check for leaks; stop and check oil level after 10 minutes.
Change Fuel Filter Elements maintenance
⚠ Do not dump old fuel into the new filter element.
- Clean fuel filter assembly and surrounding area.
- Disconnect water-in-fuel sensor wiring.
- Loosen drain plug and drain fuel into a suitable container.
- Grasp retaining ring and rotate clockwise 1/3 turn; remove ring and element.
- Inspect filter mounting base; clean as required.
- Install new filter element dry, properly indexed and seated.
- Install retaining ring with dust seal in place; hand tighten until it snaps.
- Bleed the fuel system.
Clean or Replace Air Filter Element maintenance
⚠ Never reinstall an air filter showing evidence of bad condition.
Tools: Compressed air supply
- Thoroughly clean all dirt around air filter area.
- Unlatch and remove air filter cover.
- Remove air filter element from canister; clean all dirt from inside canister.
- Clean air filter element with compressed air from clean to dirty side.
- Mark air filter to keep track of each cleaning operation.
- Depress air restriction indicator reset button and release to reset.
- Replace element after six cleanings or at least once a year.
- Check air system entirely for proper condition.
Drain and Flush Cooling System maintenance
⚠ Explosive release of fluid from pressurized cooling system can cause serious burns; only remove filler cap when cool.
- Slowly open the radiator cap.
- Remove oil cooler housing drain plug and open radiator drain valve; drain all coolant.
- Close all drain orifices after coolant has drained.
- Fill with clean water, run engine until water passes through thermostat, then drain.
- Fill with cleaning product such as PMCC2610 or PMCC2638 and follow label directions.
- Drain cleaner, fill with water, flush, run and drain again.
- Check cooling system hoses; replace as necessary.
- Close orifices, fill with specified coolant; loosen temperature sensor or plug to vent air.
Replace Fan/Alternator Poly-V Belt maintenance
Tools: Breaker bar and socket
- Inspect belts for cracks, fraying or stretched areas; replace if necessary.
- Release belt tension (automatic tensioner: breaker bar on tension arm; manual: loosen alternator cap screws).
- Remove poly-V belt from pulleys and discard.
- Install new belt, ensuring it is correctly seated in all pulley grooves.
- Apply tension to belt per Check Belt section.
- Start engine and check belt alignment.
Test Radiator Cap and Cooling System maintenance
Tools: D05104ST tester
- Remove radiator cap and attach to D05104ST tester.
- Pressurize cap to specification; gauge should hold pressure 10 seconds within normal range.
- If gauge does not hold, replace radiator cap.
- Remove cap from gauge, turn 180 degrees and retest to confirm.
- Allow engine to cool, carefully remove radiator cap and fill to normal operating level.
- Connect gauge and adapter to radiator filler neck and pressurize system.
- Check all hose connections, radiator and engine for leaks.
- Correct leaks and retest system pressure.
Prior to Starting Checks operation
⚠ Do not remove the cap from a HOT engine radiator.
