Symptoms & remedies

SymptomCauseRemedy
Battery will not chargeLoose or corroded connections: * Clean and tighten battery connections. Sulfated or worn out batteries: e Check specific gravity of each battery. ° Check electrolyte level of each battery.Loose or corroded connections: * Clean and tighten battery connections. Sulfated or worn out batteries: e Check specific gravity of each battery. ° Check electrolyte level of each battery.
Continuous generator overloading may cause high operating temperatures that can damage the windingsKeep the load within the nameplate rating
Dirty or faulty injection nozzlesSee your local dealer.
Engine hard to start or will not startImproper starting procedure. No fuel. Low battery output: e Check electrolyte level and specific gravity of battery. Excessive resistance in starting circuit: c Clean and tighten all connections on batteries.
Engine overheatsSee “Engine Overheats” in next category.
Engine runs irregularly or stalls frequentlyBelow normal engine temperature: e Remove and check thermostat. Clogged primary fuel filter element: c Clean or replace filter element. Clogged secondary fuel filter element: e Replace secondary filter element. Water or dirt in the fuel system. Dirty or faulty injection nozzles: c Have your dealer check injection nozzles.
Entire electrical system does not functionCheck DC circuit breaker. Faulty connection: « Clean and tighten battery and harness plug connections. Sulfated or worm out batteries: * Check specific gravity and electrolyte level of each battery.
Heavy exhaust smoke when the engirie is first startedCaused by the inhibitor oil
If the engine fails to start at first tryInhibitor oil used at the factory may have fouled the spark plugsRemove the plugs, clean in a suitable solvent, dry thoroughly and install
Improper valve clearanceSee your local dealer.
Injection pump out of timeSee your local dealer.
Lack of engine powerEngine overloaded: e Reduce load. Intake air restriction: * Service air cleaner. Clogged primary fuel filter element: c Clean or replace filter element. Clogged secondary fuel filter element: * Replace filter element. Improper type of fuel: c Consult fuel supplier and use proper type of fuel for operating conditions.
Low powerCarbon brushes are excessively worn
Shutdown is activated and the temperature gauge shows temperature within normal temperature rangeA. Check the engine crankcase oil level. b. If the oil level is low, fill with recommended lubricating oil and restart. Watch the oil pressure gauge carefully and shut off the engine if it does not show a normal reading (20-60 PSI) after a few seconds of operation. c. If the oil level is normal, DO NOT restart the engine. Call your dealer for assistance.
Starter cranks slowlyLow battery output: Batteries too small. * Battery cables too smail. Check specific gravity of each battery. Check electrolyte level of each battery. Crankcase oil too heavy. Loose or corroded connections: ¢ Clean and tighten loose connections.
Starter inoperativeLoose or corroded connections: * Clean and tighten loose battery and harness plug connection.Low battery output: ¢ Check specific gravity of each battery. Check electrolyte level of each battery. Defective electrical system ground wire: * Repair or replace.
When Engine Fails to StartCheck if choke lever is in its proper position. Check if fuel cock is open. Check fuel level. Check to make sure generator is not connected to an appliance. Check spark plug for loose spark plug cap. Check spark plug for contamination. Check if engine switch is in OFF. Set the choke lever to "CLOSE" position. If closed, open fuel cock. If empty, refill fuel tank making sure not to overfill. If connected, turn off the power switch on the connected appliance and unplug. If loose, push spark plug cap back into place. Remove spark plug and clean electrode. Turn engine switch to ON.
When No Electricity Is Generated at ReceptacleCheck if AC circuit breaker is in the "ON" position. Check AC receptacle and DC terminals for loose connection. Check to see if engine starting was attempted with appliances already connected to generator.
