Common problems

  • Use or operate the engine on or near any forest-covered, brush-covered land, or grass-covered land.
    Fix: The exhaust system must be equipped with a working spark arrester meeting state laws.
  • Touch the terminals and sockets while the machine is running.
    Fix: Avoid electric shock hazard: Do not touch the terminals and sockets while the machine is running.
  • Touch the machine with wet hands.

    Cause: Faulty spark plug, dirty air filter, clogged fuel line, low fuel level, faulty ignition system, or incorrect engine oil level.
    Fix: Check and replace the spark plug if necessary. Clean or replace the air filter. Clear any blockages in the fuel line. Refuel with fresh fuel. Check and adjust the ignition system as needed. Ensure the correct amount of engine oil is present.
  • Use machine in poorly-ventilated place
    Fix: To avoid exhaust gas poisoning hazard, do not use the machine indoors or in tunnels.
  • Touch terminals and sockets while running
    Fix: To avoid electric shock hazard, do not touch the terminals and sockets while the machine is running.

Adjusting Fan Belt Tension adjustment

⚠ Be sure to stop the engine and remove the key before checking the belt tension.

⚠ Be sure to reinstall the detached safety shield after maintenance or checking.

  1. Stop the engine and remove the key.
  2. Apply moderate thumb pressure to belt between pulleys.
  3. If tension is not as specified, loosen the lock nut and turn the adjust nut to get belt tension within range.
  4. Tighten up the lock nut.
  5. Replace fan belt if it is damaged.
Adjusting Valve Clearance adjustment

⚠ Valve clearance must be checked and adjusted when engine is cold.

Tools: Feeler gauge

  1. Remove the head cover, the glow plugs and the timing window cover.
  2. Align the 1TC mark line on the flywheel with center of timing window for No. 1 piston.
  3. Check valve clearance with a feeler gauge.
  4. Adjust with the adjusting screw if not within factory specification.
  5. Turn flywheel 6.28 rad (360°) and adjust all other valve clearances.
  6. Recheck clearance and firmly tighten the lock nut.
Checking Fan Belt Tension adjustment

Tools: Belt tension gauge

  1. Measure the deflection by depressing the belt halfway between the fan drive pulley and alternator pulley.
  2. Loosen the alternator mounting screws if not within specification.
  3. Relocate the alternator to adjust.
Checking Fuel Injection Pressure diagnostic

⚠ Check after making sure nobody stands in the direction the fume goes.

Tools: Nozzle tester

  1. Set the injection nozzle to a nozzle tester.
  2. Slowly move the tester handle to measure pressure at which fuel begins jetting out.
  3. Replace the adjusting washer in the nozzle holder to adjust if out of specification.
Connecting the load (terminal output model) installation

⚠ Connect or disconnect load only when engine is stopped

  1. Turn OFF the circuit breaker on the control panel.
  2. Connect the load to the A.C. output terminals.
  3. Close the terminal cover after connecting the load.
  4. Secure the cover with the lock bolts.
Air bleeding the fuel system maintenance

⚠ Do not bleed a hot engine as this could cause fuel to spill onto a hot exhaust manifold creating a danger of fire.

  1. Fill the fuel tank to the fullest extent. Open the fuel filter cock.
  2. Loosen air vent plug of the fuel filter a few turns.
  3. Screw back the plug when bubbles do not come up any more.
  4. Open the air vent plug on top of the fuel injection pump.
  5. Retighten the plug when bubbles do not come up any more.
Battery charging maintenance

⚠ The batteries come in two types: refillable and non-refillable. Do not use or charge a refillable battery if the fluid level is below the LOWER mark.

Tools: Charger, Voltmeter or hydrometer

  1. Make sure each electrolyte level is to the bottom of vent wells; add only distilled water if necessary.
  2. To slow charge, connect the charger positive terminal to the battery positive terminal and the negative to the negative.
  3. Recharge the battery as early as possible, or battery life will be extremely shortened.
  4. When exchanging an old battery for a new one, use a battery of equal specifications.
Changing Coolant maintenance

⚠ DO NOT remove the radiator cap while coolant is hot.

⚠ Work only after letting the engine and radiator cool off completely (more than 30 minutes after stopped).

  1. To drain coolant, always remove both drain plugs and simultaneously open the radiator cap.
  2. Remove the overflow pipe of the radiator pressure cap to drain the reserve tank.
  3. Prescribed coolant volume includes reserve tank 0.6 L (0.63 U.S.qts.).
  4. Fill with clean, fresh water and 50% anti-freeze.
Changing Coolant (L.L.C.) maintenance

⚠ Do not remove the radiator cap when the engine is hot.

  1. Stop the engine and let cool down.
  2. Open the water drain plug and remove radiator cap to drain the coolant.
  3. Close the water drain plug.
  4. Fill with clean water and anti-freeze until coolant level is just below the port.
  5. Fill with coolant up to FULL mark on the recovery tank.
  6. Start and operate the engine for few minutes, stop and let cool.
  7. Check coolant level of recovery tank and add coolant if necessary.
Changing Engine Oil maintenance

⚠ Be sure to stop the engine before draining engine oil.

⚠ DO NOT drain oil from a hot engine. Allow engine to cool down sufficiently to avoid being burned.

  1. Change oil after the initial 50 hours of operation and every 100 hours thereafter.
  2. Remove the drain plug to drain the engine oil; drain completely while warm.
  3. Inspect drain plug gasket. Replace if damaged.
  4. Install the oil drain plug and gasket.
  5. Add new engine oil up to the upper line of the oil level gauge.
Changing Engine Oil Filter Cartridge maintenance

⚠ Over-tightening may cause deformation of the rubber gasket.

⚠ Use only a KUBOTA genuine filter or its equivalent.

Tools: Filter wrench

  1. Remove the engine oil filter cartridge with the filter wrench.
  2. Apply engine oil slightly to the rubber gasket of new cartridge.
  3. Install the new cartridge, screwing it in by hand.
  4. Add engine oil to proper level after change.
Changing Fuel Filter Element maintenance

⚠ Stop the engine when checking the fuel line; leaking fuel may cause a fire.

  1. Close the fuel valve.
  2. Remove the fuel filter element.
  3. Install the new fuel filter element, screwing it in by hand.
  4. Check for fuel leak after replacement.
