Before you start

  • Accidental starting can cause severe injury or death. Disconnect battery cables, negative lead first.

Procedure

  1. Remove generator set from service; master switch OFF/RESET, disconnect battery charger and battery negative lead first.
  2. Open enclosure doors; remove junction box rear access panel and screws.
  3. Remove LED circuit board cover (FR II) or rotating rectifier assembly cover (FR III).
  4. Disconnect speed sensor wiring at the three push-on terminals.
  5. Remove two screws to remove the old speed sensor; save screws and mounting clamp.
  6. Mount the new bracket and new speed sensor using original screws, do not final tighten.
  7. Cut off existing female push-on terminals and strip wire ends 9 mm (3/8 in.).
  8. Match wire colors (white, black, red) and crimp to speed sensor harness GM70485.
  9. Plug speed sensor connector into speed sensor harness connector.
  10. Adjust air gap using a feeler gauge to 0.36- 0.71 mm (0.014- 0.028 in.) and final tighten adjustment screws.
  11. Position grommet, secure harness with cable ties, install covers and access panel.
  12. Restore power; reconnect battery negative lead last and battery charger, then test run the generator set.
