Procedures

12
Valve Clearance adjustment

⚠ Checking and adjusting valve clearance must be done when the engine is cold.

Tools: Feeler gauge

  1. Remove the rocker arm cover and carefully remove the gasket.
  2. Remove the spark plug so the engine can be rotated more easily.
  3. Rotate the engine to top dead center (TDC) by pulling the recoil handle slowly.
  4. Verify both rocker arms are loose at TDC on the compression stroke; if not, rotate the engine 360°.
  5. Insert a feeler gauge between the rocker arm and the valve stem to measure valve clearance.
  6. If adjustment is necessary, hold the rocker arm pivot and loosen the pivot adjusting nut.
  7. Turn the rocker arm pivot to obtain the specified clearance and re-tighten the pivot adjusting nut.
  8. Perform this procedure for the other valve.
  9. Install the gasket, rocker arm cover, and spark plug.
Connect an LPG/Propane Tank installation

⚠ Do not use thread seal tape or any other sealant on the LPG/propane hose connection.

⚠ Do not start generator if you smell LPG.

Tools: 19 mm wrench or adjustable wrench

  1. Turn the generator OFF and place it on a flat surface in a well ventilated area.
  2. Verify the propane tank valve is in the fully closed position.
  3. Remove the cover on the generator propane inlet valve.
  4. Hand thread the LPG/propane hose to the propane inlet on the generator.
  5. Tighten the hose connector with a 19 mm or adjustable wrench; do not over-tighten.
  6. Remove the safety plug or cap from the propane tank valve.
  7. Attach the other end of the hose to the LPG/propane connector on the tank and hand tighten.
  8. Turn the tank valve fully open; check all connections for leaks with a soap and water solution.
Connect the Battery installation
  1. Push down the battery access cover tab and pull the cover forward to remove it.
  2. Verify the rubber battery strap firmly secures the battery in place.
  3. Remove the cable tie securing the quick-connect plugs, then push firmly to connect them.
  4. Align the tabs on the battery access cover with the generator case and push to reinstall the cover.
Initial Oil Fill installation

⚠ This generator has been shipped without oil. Do not crank or start engine before adding recommended oil.

Tools: Oil funnel

  1. On a level surface, remove the oil access cover and oil dipstick.
  2. Using the supplied funnel and oil, add oil into the engine.
  3. Add oil incrementally near the end of the bottle to prevent overfilling.
  4. Replace the oil dipstick and hand-tighten.
  5. Replace the oil access cover.
Parallel Operation installation

⚠ NEVER connect or disconnect the parallel cord leads when a generator is running.

⚠ DO NOT connect two red leads or two black leads into the same generator.

⚠ DO NOT use ECO MODE when in parallel operation.

  1. Make sure both generator battery switches and ECO MODE switches are in the OFF position.
  2. Connect the black and red parallel cable leads to the black parallel ports; black lead to left port, red lead to right port.
  3. Connect the green ground lead to the ground terminal on each generator and tighten the nut.
  4. Start one generator and wait until the OUTPUT READY LED illuminates.
  5. Start the second generator and wait until its OUTPUT READY LED illuminates before connecting a load.
  6. Connect additional loads as described in the Power Management section.
  7. Unplug all loads before stopping the generators.
Air Filter Maintenance maintenance

⚠ Never use gasoline or other flammable solvents to clean the air filter.

⚠ Do not twist or tear the foam air filter element.

  1. Place the generator on a level surface and allow the engine to cool for several minutes.
  2. Remove the engine service cover.
  3. Turn the air cleaner cover knobs to the unlocked position and tip the cover down to remove.
  4. Remove the foam air filter and wash it in household detergent soap and warm water.
  5. Rinse the element in fresh water and allow it to dry thoroughly.
  6. Dip the foam air filter in clean engine oil then squeeze out all excess oil.
  7. Install the foam air filter in the housing and lock the air cleaner cover in place.
Battery Maintenance maintenance

⚠ Do not use the battery charger for more than 8 hours to prevent overcharging.

  1. Plug the charger into the battery charging port on the control panel.
  2. Plug the wall receptacle end of the battery charger into a 120 Volt AC wall outlet.
  3. Unplug the battery charger from the wall outlet and control panel jack after 8 hours of charging.
Battery Replacement maintenance

⚠ The battery contains sulfuric acid (electrolyte) which is highly corrosive and poisonous.

⚠ Battery posts and terminals contain lead and lead compounds. Wash hands after handling.

  1. Remove the battery access cover.
  2. Remove the quick-connect plug and battery strap; remove the battery from the unit.
  3. Disconnect the quick-disconnect cable leads from the battery.
  4. Connect the white (-) quick-connect cable to the battery negative terminal.
  5. Connect the red (+) quick-connect cable to the battery positive terminal.
  6. Install the battery and secure the battery strap on the mounting base.
  7. Connect the quick-connect plug and install the battery access cover.
Draining the Float Bowl maintenance
  1. Remove the engine service cover.
  2. Locate the drain hose extending from the bottom of the carburetor float bowl.
  3. Place the loose end of the hose outside the generator into an approved gasoline container.
  4. Loosen the float bowl drain screw and allow the fuel to drain, then tighten the screw.
  5. Route the drain hose between the air cleaner housing and engine service cover, then install the cover.
Draining the Fuel Tank maintenance

⚠ DO NOT use an electric pump.

Tools: Gasoline hand pump (not included)

  1. Unscrew the fuel tank cap and remove the fuel screen filter by slightly compressing it.
  2. Using a commercially available gasoline hand pump (not included), siphon gasoline into an approved container.
  3. Reinstall the fuel screen filter and the fuel tank cap.
  4. Start the generator and allow it to run until the engine stops.
  5. Push the battery switch to the OFF position.
  6. Disconnect the battery quick-connect plug.
  7. Remove the spark plug.
  8. Put a teaspoon of engine oil into the cylinder and pull the recoil handle until resistance is felt.
  9. Reinstall the spark plug and leave the spark plug boot disconnected.
Engine Oil Change maintenance

⚠ Remove the spark plug boot and battery quick-connect plug when working on the generator.

⚠ A new oil drain plug crush washer is recommended at each oil change.

  8. Replace the dipstick and hand-tighten.
  9. Connect the spark plug wire and install the engine service cover.
Engine Oil Level Check maintenance

⚠ Avoid skin contact with engine oil.

Tools: Damp rag

  1. Place the generator on a level surface and allow the engine to cool for several minutes.
  2. Remove the oil access cover.
  3. With a damp rag, clean around the oil dipstick.
  4. Remove the oil dipstick and wipe it clean.
  5. Insert the dipstick into the filler neck without screwing it in, then remove and verify level.
  6. If low, add recommended engine oil incrementally until level is between L and H marks.
  7. Replace the oil dipstick and hand-tighten, then install the oil access cover.
