Procedures

12
Adjust Choke Solenoid adjustment
  1. Loosen screws retaining choke solenoid to its bracket.
  2. Slide choke solenoid in slotted holes to adjust axial movement of solenoid plunger.
  3. Adjust until, with choke plate closed, solenoid is bottomed in its coil.
  4. Tighten the two screws; verify plunger and linkage move freely.
Adjust Engine Governor adjustment

Tools: pliers

  1. Loosen the governor clamp bolt.
  2. Hold governor lever at wide open throttle and rotate governor shaft fully clockwise.
  3. While holding, tighten governor clamp bolt to 70 inch-pounds (8 N-m).
  4. Start engine and let it stabilize.
  5. Turn adjuster nut to obtain 62 Hertz.
  6. Check AC voltage; adjust voltage regulator if needed.
Adjust Valve Clearance adjustment

Tools: 10mm allen wrench, feeler gauge, crow's foot

  1. Loosen the rocker arm jam nut.
  2. Use a 10mm allen wrench to turn the pivot ball stud while checking clearance with a feeler gauge.
  3. When clearance is correct, hold the pivot ball stud and tighten the jam nut with a crow's foot.
  4. Recheck valve clearance to be sure it did not change.
Adjust Voltage Regulator adjustment
  1. Set frequency at 62.5 Hertz with no load on generator.
  2. Slowly turn the voltage adjust pot until 124 VAC is measured.
  3. If voltage is not adjustable, refer to troubleshooting.
Adjusting Valve Clearance adjustment

⚠ Hold the rocker arm jam nut in place as the pivot ball stud is turned.

⚠ Start all four screws before tightening.

Tools: Feeler gauge, 10mm allen wrench, #2 or #3 Phillips screwdriver, Large socket and socket wrench

  1. Make sure the engine is cool and at 60 deg to 80 deg F.
  2. Remove spark plug wires and position them away from plugs.
  3. Remove spark plugs.
  4. Rotate the engine clockwise with a socket on the flywheel nut to bring the piston to Top Dead Center of its compression stroke.
  5. Remove the four screws attaching the valve cover.
  6. Loosen the rocker jam nut and use a 10 mm allen wrench to turn the pivot ball stud while checking clearance with a feeler gauge.
  7. When clearance is correct, hold the pivot ball stud and tighten the rocker arm jam nut to 174 in/lbs.
  8. Recheck valve clearance after tightening.
  9. Install a new valve cover gasket and re-attach the valve cover.
  10. Install spark plugs and re-attach the spark plug wires.
Check and Adjust Valve Clearance adjustment

Tools: 10mm allen wrench, feeler gauge, crow's foot torque wrench

  1. Adjust valve clearance with engine at room temperature, piston at TDC of compression stroke.
  2. Loosen rocker arm jam nut, use 10mm allen wrench to turn pivot ball stud while checking clearance with feeler gauge.
  3. Set intake valve clearance 0.002-0.004 in and exhaust valve clearance 0.002-0.004 in.
  4. Hold pivot ball stud with allen wrench and tighten rocker arm jam nut to 174 inch-pounds with a crow's foot.
  5. Recheck valve clearance after tightening jam nut.
  6. Install rocker arm cover with new gasket and retain with four screws.
Governor Adjustment adjustment

Tools: Pliers

  1. Loosen governor clamp bolt.
  2. Push spring end of governor lever clockwise to wide open throttle position.
  3. Hold governor lever at wide open throttle and rotate governor shaft fully clockwise with pliers.
  4. Tighten governor clamp bolt to 70 inch-pounds (8 N-m) while holding shaft and lever.
  5. Start engine, let stabilize and warm up at no-load.
  6. Turn adjuster nut to obtain 62 Hertz frequency reading.
  7. Reposition governor spring in lever slot if droop is excessive or for greater stability.
  8. Recheck frequency and readjust adjuster nut to obtain 62 Hertz at no-load.
  9. Check AC voltage reading; adjust voltage regulator if incorrect.
Set Ignition Magneto Air Gap adjustment

Tools: thickness gauge

  1. Rotate flywheel until magnet is under the module armature laminations.
  2. Place a 0.012-0.015 inch thickness gauge between flywheel magnet and module laminations.
  3. Loosen mounting screws and let magnet pull magneto down against gauge.
  4. Tighten both mounting screws.
  5. Remove thickness gauge by rotating flywheel.
  6. Repeat for second magneto.
Voltage Regulator Adjustment adjustment

⚠ Adjustment must be done only when unit is running at correct governed no-load speed

  1. Run unit at no-load with frequency set to 62.5 Hz.
  2. Slowly turn voltage adjust pot on voltage regulator until 124 VAC is measured.
  3. If voltage is not adjustable, proceed to troubleshooting Problem 2.
Compression Test diagnostic

Tools: compression gauge

  1. Remove both spark plugs.
  2. Insert a compression gauge into either cylinder.
  3. Crank engine until there is no further increase in pressure.
  4. Record the highest reading.
  5. Repeat for the remaining cylinder and record.
Cylinder Leak Down Test diagnostic

Tools: cylinder leak down tester, air source

  1. Remove a spark plug and remove the valve cover.
  2. Rotate crankshaft until piston reaches top dead center; both valves closed.
  3. Lock flywheel at top dead center.
  4. Attach leak down tester adapter to spark plug hole.
  5. Connect air source of at least 90 psi and adjust regulated pressure to 80 psi.
  6. Read cylinder pressure; 20 percent leakage is normally acceptable.
  7. Listen for air escaping at carburetor, exhaust and crankcase breather.
  8. Repeat on the remaining cylinder.
Starter Motor Performance Test diagnostic

Tools: clamp-on ammeter, tachometer (P/N 042223), fully charged 12-volt battery, test bracket

  1. A fully charged 12 volt battery is required.
  2. Connect jumper cables and clamp-on ammeter as shown.
  3. Activate the starter motor and note ammeter and tachometer readings after 2-4 seconds stabilization.
  4. Good starter will be within minimum rpm and maximum amps specification.
