Procedures
12Adjust Valve Clearance adjustment
Tools: feeler gauge, torque wrench
- Rotate crankshaft to establish TDC on compression stroke for cylinder 1.
- Check compression at spark plug hole and keyway aligned with cylinder 1.
- Insert a 0.127 mm (0.005 in.) feeler gauge between valve and rocker arm.
- Turn adjuster until slight drag is felt; hold; tighten setscrew to 7.9 N·m.
- Recheck adjustment; proper valve clearance is 0.101/0.152 mm.
- Viewed from PTO end, rotate crankshaft 270° counterclockwise; align keyway with cylinder 2; repeat for side 2.
Governor Initial Adjustment adjustment
⚠ Do not tamper with governor setting. Overspeed is hazardous and could cause personal injury.
Tools: 7 mm hex socket, torque wrench
- Make sure throttle linkage is connected to governor arm and throttle lever on throttle body.
- Loosen nut holding governor lever to cross shaft.
- Move governor lever toward throttle body as far as it will go (wide open throttle) and hold.
- Use 7 mm hex socket on end of cross shaft; rotate counterclockwise as far as it will turn; torque nut to 6.8 N·m.
Compression Test diagnostic
Tools: compression tester
- Perform on a warm engine. Clean dirt and debris away from base of spark plug(s).
- Be sure battery is fully charged, unplug ECU, and throttle is wide open.
- Crank engine; compression should be at least 160 psi and should not vary more than 15% between cylinders.
Crankcase Vacuum Test diagnostic
⚠ Carbon Monoxide can cause severe nausea, fainting or death. Avoid inhaling exhaust fumes.
Tools: water manometer, rubber stopper, pinch clamp
- Insert rubber stopper into oil fill hole; connect hose and manometer with tapered adapters.
- Start engine and run no-load high speed.
- Open clamp and note water level. Engine side should be at least 10.2 cm (4 in.) above open side.
- Close pinch clamp before stopping engine.
Cylinder Leakdown Test diagnostic
Tools: cylinder leakdown tester, adapter hose, holding tool, breaker bar
- Run engine for 3-5 minutes to warm it up.
- Remove spark plug(s) and air filter from engine.
- Rotate crankshaft until piston is at TDC of compression stroke; hold engine in this position.
- Install adapter into spark plug hole, but do not attach it to tester at this time.
- Turn regulator knob completely counterclockwise.
- Connect an air source of at least 50 psi to tester.
- Turn regulator knob clockwise until gauge needle is in yellow set area.
- Connect tester to adapter; open tester valve; note gauge reading and listen for escaping air.
ECU Reset Procedure diagnostic
⚠ System will NOT reset when battery is disconnected.
⚠ TPS Learn Procedure must be performed after ECU Reset.
Tools: Kohler EFI service kit Red wire jumper
- Turn key/ignition OFF.
- Install Red wire jumper from Kohler EFI service kit onto service port.
- Turn key/ignition ON, then OFF; count 10 seconds.
- Turn key/ignition ON, then OFF; count 10 seconds a second time.
- Remove Red wire jumper. Turn key ON, then OFF; count 10 seconds a third time. ECU is reset.
TPS Learn Procedure diagnostic
- Turn idle screw clockwise one full turn prior to key ON after ECU Reset.
- Start engine; run at low idle until engine is warm.
- Idle speed must be above 1500 RPM. If below, set 1700 RPM; shut down; perform ECU Reset again.
- Restart engine; adjust idle speed down to 1500 RPM; allow engine to dwell about 3 seconds.
- Adjust idle speed to final specified speed setting.
- Turn key/ignition OFF and count to 10 seconds. Learn procedure is complete.
Test for Spark diagnostic
⚠ Do not crank engine or perform tests with 1 spark plug lead disconnected and not grounded.
Tools: spark tester
- With engine stopped, disconnect 1 spark plug lead.
- Connect spark plug lead to post terminal of spark tester and attach tester clip to a good engine ground.
- Crank engine over, establishing a minimum of 550-600 RPM, and observe tester for spark.
- Repeat spark test on opposite cylinder if cylinders are being tested individually.
Air Cooling Maintenance maintenance
⚠ Hot Parts can cause severe burns. Never operate engine with heat shields or guards removed.
- Clean screens, cooling fins, and other external surfaces of engine to prevent overheating.
- Avoid spraying water at wiring harness or any electrical components.
Change Oil and Filter maintenance
⚠ Disconnect and ground spark plug lead(s) before servicing.
- Change oil while engine is warm. Clean area around oil fill cap/dipstick.
- Remove drain plug and oil fill cap/dipstick. Allow oil to drain completely.
- Clean area around oil filter, place container under filter, remove filter and wipe mounting surface.
- Reinstall drain plug. Torque to 10 ft. lb. (13.6 N·m).
- Place new filter in shallow pan open end up; fill with new oil to bottom of threads; allow 2 minutes.
- Apply thin film of clean oil to rubber gasket on new filter.
- Refer to instructions on oil filter for proper installation.
- Fill crankcase with new oil to top of indicator on dipstick.
- Reinstall oil fill cap/dipstick and tighten securely.
- Start engine; check for oil leaks. Stop engine; correct leaks. Recheck oil level.
- Dispose of used oil and filter in accordance with local ordinances.
Check Oil Level maintenance
⚠ Never run engine with oil level below or above operating range indicator on dipstick.
- Ensure engine is cool. Clean oil fill/dipstick areas of any debris.
- Remove dipstick; wipe oil off.
- Reinsert dipstick into tube; press completely down.
- Remove dipstick; check oil level. Level should be at top of indicator on dipstick.
- If oil is low on indicator, add oil up to top of indicator mark.
- Reinstall and secure dipstick.
Paper Element Replacement maintenance
⚠ Paper element cannot be blown out with compressed air.
- Separate precleaner from element; service precleaner and replace paper element.
- Install precleaner over new paper element and install on base.
- Reinstall cover; place latches onto cover; pull down bails to secure cover.
