Adjusting Valve Clearance adjustment

⚠ Hold the rocker arm jam nut in place as the pivot ball stud is turned.

⚠ Start all four screws before tightening.

Tools: Feeler gauge, 10mm allen wrench, #2 or #3 Phillips screwdriver, Large socket and socket wrench

  1. Make sure the engine is cool and at 60 deg to 80 deg F.
  2. Remove spark plug wires and position them away from plugs.
  3. Remove spark plugs.
  4. Rotate the engine clockwise with a socket on the flywheel nut to bring the piston to Top Dead Center of its compression stroke.
  5. Remove the four screws attaching the valve cover.
  6. Loosen the rocker jam nut and use a 10 mm allen wrench to turn the pivot ball stud while checking clearance with a feeler gauge.
  7. When clearance is correct, hold the pivot ball stud and tighten the rocker arm jam nut to 174 in/lbs.
  8. Recheck valve clearance after tightening.
  9. Install a new valve cover gasket and re-attach the valve cover.
  10. Install spark plugs and re-attach the spark plug wires.
Battery Cable Connections installation

⚠ Damage will result if the battery connections are made in reverse.

  1. Connect the battery cable from the POSITIVE (POS or +) post to the lug on the starter contactor.
  2. Check that the battery cable boot for the starter cable has been installed.
  3. Connect the battery cable from the NEGATIVE (NEG or -) post to the frame ground connection.
  4. Connect cables so the connectors are clean and tight.
LP Gas System Leakage Test installation

⚠ DO NOT USE ANY FLAME TO TEST FOR LEAKS.

Tools: soap and water solution, separate 12 volt DC source

  1. Do not place the generator into service until the gas system has been properly tested for leaks.
  2. Provide a separate source of 12 volts DC to open the gaseous fuel solenoid valve.
  3. Test all connections, hoses, valve regulators and fittings under gas or air pressure of not less than 90 psi (620 kPa).
  4. Use soap and water or an equivalent solution to check for leaks.
Testing Under Load (Post Installation) installation

⚠ You must not allow the unit to overheat during prolonged operation.

  1. Apply electrical loads equal to about 75 to 100 percent of the unit's rated wattage/amperage capacity.
  2. Let the unit run at least 30 minutes with load applied.
  3. Check that the unit is not running excessively hot and that adequate cooling airflow is available.
Changing the Engine Oil and/or Oil Filter maintenance

⚠ DO NOT FILL ABOVE THE 'FULL' MARK.

Tools: suitable container for oil, clean lint-free cloth

  1. Run the engine until thoroughly warmed up (at least five minutes), then shut OFF the engine.
  2. With the engine still warm, remove the oil drain plug and drain oil into a suitable container.
  3. After the oil has drained, replace the oil drain plug (if only changing oil, go to step 7).
  4. Remove the old oil filter by turning it counterclockwise.
  5. Apply a light coating of clean engine oil to the gasket of the new filter.
  6. Screw the new filter on by hand until its gasket lightly contacts the oil filter adapter; tighten an additional 3/4 to one turn.
  7. Remove the dipstick and fill crankcase with proper oil; capacity about 1.8 liters or 1.9 quarts with filter change.
  8. Install and tighten the dipstick before operating the engine.
  9. Start the engine and check for leaks.
Checking the Engine Oil Level maintenance

⚠ Never operate the engine with the oil level below the 'Add' mark.

⚠ DO NOT FILL ABOVE THE 'FULL' MARK.

Tools: clean lint-free cloth

  1. Be sure the generator is as level as possible.
  2. Remove the dipstick and wipe it dry with a clean, lint-free cloth.
  3. Install and tighten the dipstick cap, then remove it again; oil should be at 'Full' mark.
  4. If necessary, remove oil fill cap on rocker cover and slowly add oil to the 'Full' mark.
  5. Install and tighten the oil fill cap and the dipstick before operating the engine.
Checking the Engine Spark Plug maintenance

⚠ Do not blast the spark plug to clean.

Tools: wire brush, commercial solvent, wire feeler gauge

  1. Clean the area around the base of the spark plug to keep dirt and debris out of the engine.
  2. Remove the spark plug and check its condition; replace if worn or if reuse is questionable.
  3. Check the spark plug gap with a wire feeler gauge and adjust to 0.030 inch (0.76 mm) by carefully bending the ground electrode.
Cleaning the Foam Precleaner maintenance

⚠ DO NOT TWIST the foam precleaner

Tools: clean cloth

  1. Turn the knob counterclockwise to loosen.
  2. Remove the cover, foam precleaner and paper filter.
  3. Remove the foam precleaner from the cover.
  4. Wash the foam precleaner in liquid detergent and water.
  5. Wrap the foam precleaner in a clean cloth and gently squeeze it dry.
  6. Saturate the precleaner in clean engine oil, then squeeze out excess oil (DO NOT TWIST).
  7. Install the precleaner into the cover, followed by the paper filter with tabs locked into cover slots.
  8. Install the cover, foam precleaner and paper filter.
  9. Replace knob to retain the filter in place.
Cleaning the Spark Arrestor maintenance

⚠ DO NOT USE a defective screen.

Tools: commercial solvent

  1. Remove the screen retaining bracket by removing the screw.
  2. Slide the spark arrestor screen out from the tail pipe.
  3. Inspect screen and replace if torn, perforated or otherwise damaged.
  4. If screen is not damaged, clean it with commercial solvent.
  5. Replace the screen and the retaining bracket.
Removal From Service (Storage) maintenance

⚠ Never store the battery on any concrete or earthen floor.

  1. Start the engine and let it warm up.
  2. Close the fuel shutoff valve in the fuel supply line and allow the unit to shut down.
  3. While the engine is still warm, drain the oil completely and refill the crankcase with SAE 5W-30 'For Service SF' oil.
  4. Attach a tag to the engine indicating the viscosity and classification of the oil in the crankcase.
  5. Remove the spark plug and pour two or three tablespoons of clean, fresh engine oil into the spark plug threaded opening; reinstall and tighten.
  6. Remove the battery and store it in a cool, dry room on a wooden board.
  7. Clean and wipe the entire generator.
Replacing the Paper Air Filter maintenance
  1. Loosen the plastic wing screw and remove the air box cover.
  2. Remove the exterior steel wing nut and pull the air filter assembly out.
  3. Separate hardware (offset stud, gasket, flat washer, lock washer, wing nut) and save for the new filter.
  4. Discard the old air filter and pre-cleaner safely.
  5. Insert the flanged end of the offset stud into the new air filter and through the end plate hole.
  6. Install the gasket, flat washer, lock washer and wing nut in that order.
  7. Saturate the foam pre-cleaner in clean engine oil and squeeze out excess evenly (DO NOT TWIST).
  8. Slide the foam pre-cleaner onto the air filter.
  9. Angle the assembly into the compartment and insert the offset stud into the left-side hole.
  10. Replace the steel wing nut, then the air box cover and plastic wing screw.
Return to Service maintenance

⚠ Damage may occur if the battery is connected incorrectly.

⚠ DO NOT USE TAP WATER IN THE BATTERY.

  1. Check the tag on the engine for oil viscosity and classification and verify correct oil is used.
  2. Check the state of the battery; fill unsealed cells with distilled water and recharge to 100 percent.
  3. Clean and wipe the entire generator.
  4. Reconnect the battery, observing battery polarity.
  5. Turn OFF all electrical loads, add fuel if necessary, then start the engine.
  6. Allow the unit to warm up thoroughly.
  7. Apply electrical loads to at least 50 percent of the unit's rated wattage capacity.
  8. When the engine is thoroughly warmed up, shut it down.
