Procedures
12Carburetor Adjustment Under Load adjustment
- Ensure ignition and governor are adjusted.
- Start and warm engine.
- If engine will not start, close both needle valves gently, then open each 1 to 1-1/2 turns, idle first then main.
- With no load, turn idle adjustment out until speed drops slightly below normal; turn in until speed returns to normal.
- Apply full load, turn main adjustment in until speed drops slightly below normal; turn out until speed returns to normal.
Carburetor Adjustment Under No Load Conditions adjustment
- Perform steps 1 and 2 of Adjustment Under Load.
- Pull governor mechanism to slow unit to about 400-500 rpm.
- Set idle adjustment screw for even operation.
- Release governor to accelerate; adjust main needle outward about 1/4 turn if needed.
- Set throttle stop screw at desired idle speed.
Float-Level Check adjustment
- Remove fuel line, air cleaner hose, governor linkage, and choke wires.
- Remove two carburetor mounting nuts and carburetor.
- Unscrew float bowl nut and remove main fuel adjustment assembly.
- Invert carburetor and check float surface nearest gasket is 1/8 ± 1/16 inch from gasket.
- Bend float tab as required.
- Reassemble, install, and test.
Governor Adjustment adjustment
Tools: Tachometer
- Run engine about 15 minutes to normal operating temperature.
- Adjust carburetor main jet for best full load mixture.
- Adjust carburetor idle needle with no load.
- Adjust length of governor linkage.
- Check governor linkage and throttle shaft for binding or excessive looseness.
- Adjust governor spring tension for nominal no load speed.
- Check rpm drop between no load and full load and adjust sensitivity.
- Recheck speed adjustment.
- Set carburetor throttle stop screw.
Ignition Timing Check - Engine Not Running adjustment
Tools: Continuity test lamp
- Connect continuity test lamp across breaker points.
- Touch one prod to breaker box terminal with coil lead and other to ground.
- Turn crankshaft counterclockwise until points close.
- Slowly turn crankshaft clockwise.
- Lamp should go out just as points break, indicating ignition at 25° BTC.
Ignition Timing Check - Engine Running adjustment
Tools: Timing light
- Connect timing light per manufacturer instructions.
- Start engine and check timing at idle.
- Pointer on flywheel should line up with 25° mark on cover.
- If marks do not line up, readjust point gap.
- To advance timing, slightly open breaker point gap.
- To retard timing, slightly close breaker point gap.
- Recheck timing and point gap.
Tappet Adjustment adjustment
⚠ Adjust valve clearance only when engine is at ambient temperature.
Tools: Feeler gauge
- Remove parts to access valve tappets.
- Remove spark plugs.
- Turn engine by hand until left intake valve opens and closes and TC mark aligns.
- Ensure both valves closed and left piston at top of compression stroke.
- Check clearance with gauge between valve stem and tappet.
- Adjust with self-locking screw to correct clearance.
- For right cylinder, turn engine one revolution and repeat.
- Replace parts and torque manifold bolts.
Thermo-Magnetic Choke Adjustment adjustment
- Shut down engine at least one hour; adjust at ambient temperature.
- Loosen screw securing choke body assembly.
- Rotate choke body clockwise to richen or counterclockwise to lean.
- For ambient above 85°F, choke should be fully opened.
- For ambient below 25°F, choke should be opened 1/4 inch with solenoid not engaged.
- Tighten choke body screw.
Breaker Point Replacement and Adjustment maintenance
Tools: Flat thickness gauge, Screwdriver
- Remove breaker box cover.
- Remove spark plugs for easier rotation.
- Remove mounting screw A and pull points out to disconnect leads.
- Replace condenser with new one.
- Install new points but do not fully tighten screw A.
- Rotate engine until 25° BTC mark aligns, then another 1/4 turn.
- Set point gap using screwdriver in notch; gap .020 in.
- Tighten screw and recheck gap.
- Check ignition timing.
Carburetor Assembly and Installation repair
- Clean components and repair or replace defective parts.
- Install throttle shaft and plate with new screws and lock washers.
- Install choke shaft and plate with new screws and lock washers.
- Install fuel inlet valve seat and valve.
- Install float and float pin, adjusting float level.
- Install bowl ring gasket, bowl, and bowl nut; tighten main jet assembly and back out to 1-1/2 turns.
- Install idle adjusting screw finger-tight and back out 1 to 1-1/2 turns.
- Install choke and adjust.
- Install carburetor and connect fuel inlet, governor, air cleaner hose, and choke wires.
- Adjust needle settings and check performance.
Carburetor Removal and Disassembly repair
- Remove fuel line, air cleaner hose, governor linkage, and choke wires.
- Remove two carburetor mounting nuts and remove carburetor.
- Remove main jet assembly and bowl.
- Remove float pin and float.
- Lift out fuel inlet valve and unscrew valve seat.
- Remove idle adjustment needle.
- Remove throttle plate screws and plate, then pull out throttle shaft.
- Remove choke plate screws and plate, then pull out choke shaft.
Cylinder Head Removal and Cleaning repair
⚠ Do not remove heads when hot. Warpage may occur.
Tools: 1/2 inch socket wrench, Torque wrench
- Use 1/2 inch socket wrench to remove cylinder head bolts; lift heads off.
- Clean out carbon deposits without damaging sealing edges.
- Use new head gaskets and clean head and block surfaces.
- Place heads in position and torque bolts in sequence: 5 ft-lb, then 10 ft-lb, etc., to 17-19 ft-lb.
- Recheck torque after engine has run 50 hours.
