Testing Generator Under Load diagnostic

⚠ High voltage present at transfer switch and terminals

Tools: AC voltmeter, frequency meter, clamp-on amp meter

  1. Verify generator OFF and all loads off
  2. Turn off utility power supply to transfer switch
  3. Manually set transfer switch to STANDBY
  4. Press MANUAL to crank/start engine and allow warm-up
  5. Set generator MLCB to ON (CLOSED)
  6. Turn on circuit breakers/loads supplied by generator
  7. Connect AC voltmeter/frequency meter across E1,E2,E3 and verify voltage near rated value; verify not overloaded with clamp amp meter
  8. Run at full rated load 20-30 minutes, listening/inspecting for abnormal operation
  9. Turn off loads, set MLCB OFF, run at no-load 2-5 minutes, then press OFF
Installing the Battery installation

⚠ Batteries emit explosive gases; always connect positive battery cable first to avoid spark

  1. Loosen nylon strap on battery tray
  2. Install battery onto tray
  3. Secure nylon strap over top of battery and tighten
  4. Install positive battery cable (red) to positive (+) terminal
  5. Install negative battery cable (black) to negative (-) terminal
Checking Lubricating Oil Level and Drain Hose maintenance

⚠ Allow engine to cool before draining oil

Tools: clean lint-free cloth

  1. Wait at least 10 minutes after running for oil to drain into pan
  2. Remove oil dipstick and wipe dry
  3. Slowly insert dipstick, verify fully seated, wait 10 seconds
  4. Slowly remove dipstick and verify oil level at or near FULL mark
  5. Add oil as necessary, do not fill above FULL mark
  6. Install dipstick and fill cap
  7. Inspect oil drain hose for leaks, nicks, cuts, tears; replace as necessary

Tools: spark plug socket wrench, wire feeler gauge, wire brush

  1. Remove negative battery cable
  2. Remove spark plug cables from terminals by grasping the boot
  3. Clean area around spark plugs and remove plugs with a spark plug socket
  4. Inspect threads; clean deposits with penetrating oil/thread chaser if needed
  5. Clean plugs with wire brush and solvent, or replace with new plugs
  6. Inspect/adjust gap with a wire feeler gauge by bending the ground electrode
  7. Finger tighten plugs then torque to spec with a spark plug socket
  8. Install spark plug cables and capture in cable clips
Draining and Flushing Coolant System maintenance

  1. Disconnect and empty coolant overflow reservoir
  2. Remove plastic cover at top of enclosure and slowly unscrew radiator cap
  3. Open radiator drain screw and drain coolant into a container
  4. Close drain screw, install drain plug and hose
  5. Pour recommended coolant into filler neck until radiator is full
  6. Install radiator cap and run engine until thermostat opens
  7. Inspect coolant hoses for leaks
  8. Repeat drain/refill cycle a second time
  9. Add coolant to overflow reservoir and install enclosure cover
Replacing Lubricating Oil and Oil Filter maintenance

Tools: two wrenches

  1. Remove oil drain hose from holding clamp
  2. Hold hex on oil drain hose fitting, remove oil drain plug, drain oil into container
  3. Install oil drain plug and return hose to holding clamp
  4. Turn oil filter counterclockwise to remove from adapter
  5. Apply light coat of clean engine oil to new filter gasket
  6. Install filter by hand until gasket contacts adapter, then tighten an additional 3/4 to 1 full turn
  7. Fill engine with recommended oil quantity and type
  8. Run engine one minute and inspect for leaks
  9. Wait 10 minutes, check oil level and add oil as necessary
