Before you start

  • Ensure good ventilation; batteries give off explosive oxyhydrogen gas.
  • Never confuse the position of the cables on the battery.
  • The black (-) jumper cable must not contact the positive lead's connection to the starter motor.
  • Do not touch connections during start attempt; risk of sparks.
  • Do not lean over any of the batteries.

Procedure

  1. Check that the voltage of the booster battery is the same as the engine's system voltage.
  2. Connect red (+) jumper cable to positive of discharged batteries, then to positive of booster battery.
  3. Connect black (-) jumper cable to negative of booster battery and to a spot away from negative of discharged batteries.
  4. Start the engine and run at high idle about 10 minutes to charge the batteries.
  5. Switch off the engine; remove jumper cables in reverse order, one cable at a time.
