Kohler KG2204 — Change Engine Oil and Oil Filter

Before you start

  • Accidental starting can cause severe injury or death
  • Hot engine and exhaust system can cause severe injury or death

Procedure

  1. Stop the engine and allow it to cool
  2. Place drop cloth and collection container beneath the oil drain plug
  3. Remove the oil drain plug and drain oil
  4. Remove the old oil filter with an oil filter wrench
  5. Wipe the oil filter installation surface clean and inspect for damage
  6. Apply a thin film of fresh oil to the new filter gasket
  7. Screw in the new oil filter by hand then tighten an additional 3/4 turn
  8. Install and tighten the oil drain plug to 20–25 Nm
  9. Add fresh oil through the oil filler cap
  10. Check oil level is between L and F marks
  11. Install and tighten the oil filler cap
  12. Start and run the engine without load for approximately 5 minutes

Specs & values

  • Oil cooler adapter nut torque 40 Nm (29.5 ft. lb.)
  • Oil filter torque 25 Nm (18.4 ft. lb.)
  • Oil pan drain plug torque 20–25 Nm (14.8–18.4 ft. lb.)
