Cummins/Onan — Exhaust System Checks

Maintenance

From a Cummins/Onan operator's manual — check it applies to your exact model before use.

Applies to: Cummins/Onan HDKC

Before you start

  • Exhaust gas is deadly - do not operate the generator set if there is an exhaust leak

Procedure

  1. Look and listen for exhaust system leaks while the generator set is running; shut down if a leak is found.
  2. Look for openings or holes between the generator set compartment and vehicle cab or living space.
  3. Replace dented, bent, or severely rusted sections of the tailpipe and make sure the tailpipe extends at least 25.4 mm (1 in) beyond the perimeter of the vehicle.
  4. Park the vehicle so that generator set exhaust gases disperse away from the vehicle.
  5. Do not operate power ventilators or exhaust fans while the vehicle is standing with the generator set running.
  6. Check all CO monitors to assure proper operation.
