Cummins/Onan — Engine Shut-Down

Operation

From a Cummins/Onan owner's manual covering: KT38, KTA19, Kt19, KtA38, KtA50, N-855, NH-672, NH-743, NH-855, NT-855, NTA-855, NTC-270…. Check it applies to your exact model before use.

Applies to: Cummins/Onan Kt19, Cummins/Onan KTA38, Cummins/Onan KTA50

Before you start

  • Never leave the switch key or the override button in the valve open or run position when the engine is not running; with overhead tanks this would allow fuel to drain into the cylinders, causing a hydraulic lock.

Procedure

  1. Idle the engine 3 to 5 minutes before shutting it down to allow lubricating oil and water to carry heat away from the combustion chamber, bearings and shafts.
  2. Turn the switch to the 'Off' position, or turn the manual shut-down valve knob, to stop the engine.
  3. If the manual override on the electric shut-down valve is used, turn the button fully counterclockwise to stop the engine.

Specs & values

  • Turbocharger temperature may rise as much as 100 F [38 C] if the engine is stopped suddenly
