From a Cummins/Onan service manual — check it applies to your exact model before use.
Applies to: Cummins/Onan HDKA, Cummins/Onan HDKAL engine, Cummins/Onan HDKAS engine
Before you start
- Exhaust gases present the hazard of severe personal injury or death. Make the compartment walls vapor tight to the interior of the vehicle to prevent exhaust fumes from entering the living quarters.
Procedure
- Install the generator set in a compartment of its own.
- If any part of the compartment is above the vehicle floor, separate the compartment from the living quarters with vapor-tight walls.
- Provide unobstructed cooling air inlets for the generator and radiator.
- Provide access to the set for maintenance.
- Provide space for removing the set through the door or out the bottom of the compartment.
- Carefully measure the compartment to provide proper clearance for the generator set. Allow extra space for insulation clearance.
- Make holes in the bottom of the compartment for genset mounting, air outlet and oil drain.
- If there is wood under the compartment, remove the section and replace it with a sheet metal floor and an adequate steel support frame.
- Put holes in the compartment to run connections for the fuel line, battery cable, remote control harness and AC conduit.
- Design holes so they will not chafe or restrict the lines.
- Position the generator set in the compartment and bolt in place.
