Cummins/Onan 80MDKAL11454B — Filling the Cooling System

Maintenance

For the Cummins/Onan 80MDKAL11454B, from the Cummins/Onan operator's manual.

Applies to: Cummins/Onan MDKAL, Kubota D1005 engine

Before you start

  • Attempting to fill the coolant system too quickly can cause incomplete filling of the engine block, leading to engine damage during warm-up.
  • Contact with hot coolant can result in serious burns; do not bleed hot, pressurized coolant from a closed cooling system.

Procedure

  1. Verify that all drain cocks are closed and all hose clamps are secure.
  2. Remove the cooling system pressure cap and slowly fill with the 50/50 coolant mixture until coolant reaches the bottom of the fill tube.
  3. Fill the recovery tank with coolant mixture to the COLD mark.
  4. Operate the genset until normal operating temperature is attained (about 15 minutes).
  5. Shut down the genset and let cool.
  6. Add coolant to the recovery tank until level stabilizes at the COLD mark; this may require several operation cycles.

Specs & values

  • Cooling system capacity 4 qt (3.78 L)
  • About 15 minutes operation to reach normal operating temperature
