Cummins/Onan 80MDKAL11454B — Connecting a Load (determining maximum electrical load)

Operation · AC electrical system

For the Cummins/Onan 80MDKAL11454B, from the Cummins/Onan operator's manual.

Applies to: Cummins/Onan MDKAL, Kubota D1005 engine

Before you start

  • Electrical shock can cause severe personal injury or death; appliances should be in good working condition and properly grounded.
  • Do not connect the generator set to the public utility or any other electrical power system; an approved transfer switch must be used if more than one power source is available.

Procedure

  1. Determine the maximum load (wattage) supplied by the generator set/vessel circuit by multiplying the circuit breaker size by the AC output voltage.
  2. Check the wattage requirement of each appliance to be connected (see Table 3).
  3. Add the wattages of all items to be powered at the same time; do not exceed the limit of the circuit breaker.
  4. Start the generator set and let it warm up a few minutes before applying electrical load.
  5. Start motorized appliances first, before other appliances.

Specs & values

  • Example: 85 (amps) x 120 (volts) = 10,200 watts
  • Motorized appliances may draw as much as three times operating power during startup
