Caterpillar C15 Industrial Engine — Turbocharger - Inspect

Maintenance

For the Caterpillar C15 Industrial Engine, from the Caterpillar owner's manual.

Applies to: Caterpillar C1.5 engine

Before you start

  • Turbocharger bearing failures can cause large quantities of oil to enter the air inlet and exhaust systems. Loss of engine lubricant can result in serious engine damage.

Procedure

  1. Remove the exhaust outlet piping and air inlet piping from the turbocharger. Inspect piping for oil. Clean interior of pipes.
  2. Turn the compressor wheel and turbine wheel by hand. The assembly should turn freely.
  3. Inspect compressor wheel and turbine wheel for contact with the turbocharger housing. If contact is indicated, the turbocharger must be reconditioned.
  4. Check compressor wheel for cleanliness. Dirt on blade side indicates air filtering issue. Oil on back side may indicate a failed turbocharger oil seal.
  5. Use a dial indicator to check the end clearance on the shaft. If end play is greater than Service Manual specifications, repair or replace the turbocharger.
  6. Inspect the bore of the turbine housing for corrosion.
  7. Clean the turbocharger housing with standard shop solvents and a soft bristle brush.
  8. Fasten the air inlet piping and exhaust outlet piping to the turbocharger housing.
