Caterpillar C15 Industrial Engine — Overhaul Considerations
Maintenance · Engine
For the Caterpillar C15 Industrial Engine, from the Caterpillar owner's manual.
Applies to: Caterpillar C1.5 engine
Before you start
- Do not use caustic cleaners to clean the core. Caustic cleaners can attack internal metals and cause leakage.
Procedure
- The need for an overhaul is generally indicated by increased fuel consumption and reduced power.
- When oil consumption rises to three times the original rate due to normal wear, schedule an engine overhaul.
- Before failure overhaul: avoid costly unplanned downtime; many original parts may be reused; extend engine service life.
- After failure overhaul: if engine block or crankshaft needs repair, overhaul cost should be between 40 and 50 percent of a new engine with similar exchange core.
- Recommended overhaul: scheduled engine overhaul by your Caterpillar dealer.
- Unit fuel injector: clean body, replace O-rings and gasket on injector sleeve. Clean area around injector seating.
- Inspect piston rings, crankshaft bearings, valve rotators, and crankshaft seals. Caterpillar recommends new parts at each overhaul.
- Inspect crankshaft, camshaft, camshaft bearings, and camshaft followers for wear or scuffing.
- Caterpillar recommends replacing the crankshaft vibration damper.
- Remove, clean, and pressure test the oil cooler core and aftercooler core.
