Caterpillar C15 Industrial Engine — Engine Valve Lash - Inspect/Adjust

Adjustments

For the Caterpillar C15 Industrial Engine, from the Caterpillar owner's manual.

Applies to: Caterpillar C1.5 engine

Before you start

  • Hot engine components can cause burns.
  • Operation with improper valve adjustments can reduce engine efficiency.

Procedure

  1. Initial valve lash adjustment on new, rebuilt, or remanufactured engines is recommended at the first scheduled oil change.
  2. Only qualified service personnel should perform this maintenance.
  3. Ensure the engine cannot be started. Do not use the starting motor to turn the flywheel.
  4. Ensure the engine is stopped and allow valves to cool before measuring valve lash.
  5. Refer to the Service Manual or your Caterpillar dealer for the complete valve lash adjustment procedure.
  6. Inspect and adjust valve actuators, injectors, and compression brakes when valves are inspected and adjusted.
