Caterpillar 3512 — Turbocharger - Inspect
Maintenance
For the Caterpillar 3512, from the Caterpillar owner's manual.
Applies to: Caterpillar 3512
Before you start
- Turbocharger bearing failures can cause large quantities of oil to enter the air inlet and exhaust systems. Loss of engine lubricant can result in serious engine damage.
Procedure
- Remove the exhaust outlet piping and the air inlet piping. Visually inspect the piping for oil.
- Turn the compressor wheel and turbine wheel by hand. The assembly should turn freely.
- Inspect the wheels for contact with the turbocharger housing. If contact is indicated, the turbocharger must be reconditioned.
- Check the compressor wheel for cleanliness. Oil on the back side may indicate a failed turbocharger oil seal.
- Use a dial indicator to check the end clearance on the shaft. Repair or replace if outside Service Manual specifications.
- Inspect the bore of the turbine housing for corrosion.
- Clean the turbocharger housing with standard shop solvents and a soft bristle brush.
- Fasten the air inlet piping and the exhaust outlet piping to the turbocharger housing.
