Caterpillar 3512 — Overhaul Considerations

Testing & diagnosis · Engine

For the Caterpillar 3512, from the Caterpillar owner's manual.

Applies to: Caterpillar 3512

Procedure

  1. Use total fuel consumption as the most important factor for estimating the overhaul interval.
  2. Estimate the hours until overhaul using the equation H = F/R.
  3. If actual fuel consumption records are not available, estimate the average percent of load and use the engine spec sheet.
  4. Monitor oil consumption; when it has risen to three times the original rate, schedule an engine overhaul.
  5. Monitor noise, vibration, oil consumption, and crankcase blowby.
  6. Consult your Caterpillar dealer about scheduling a major overhaul.

Specs & values

  • H = F/R, where H is estimated hours until overhaul, F is estimated total fuel consumption, and R is the rate of fuel consumption in liters per hour or gallons per hour
  • Schedule overhaul when oil consumption has risen to three times the original rate
