Maintenance

For the Caterpillar 3512, from the Caterpillar owner's manual.

Applies to: Caterpillar 3512

Before you start

  • Hot coolant can cause serious burns. Stop the engine and wait until components are cool before loosening the filler cap.

Procedure

  1. Stop the engine and allow it to cool. Ensure the engine will not start.
  2. Loosen the filler cap slowly to relieve pressure. Remove the filler cap.
  3. Open the cooling system drain valves or remove drain plugs (1) and (2). Allow the coolant to drain.
  4. Flush the cooling system with clean water to remove debris.
  5. Close drain valves; clean and install the drain plugs.
  6. Fill with clean water and Caterpillar Fast Acting Cooling System Cleaner; install filler cap.
  7. Start engine; operate a minimum of 30 minutes at coolant temperature of at least 82 °C (180 °F).
  8. Stop the engine and allow it to cool; drain.
  9. Flush with clean water until the drained water is clean. Close drain valves; install drain plugs.
  10. Fill the cooling system with coolant/antifreeze; do not install the filler cap.
  11. Start the engine to purge air; allow coolant to warm and stabilize; stop the engine.
  12. Check the coolant level on the sight gauge, or within 13 mm (.5 inch) below the filler pipe.
  13. Clean and inspect the filler cap gaskets; pressure test the cap; replace if it does not hold pressure.
  14. Start the engine. Inspect the cooling system for leaks and for proper operating temperature.
