Caterpillar 3054C — Fuel Injection Nozzles - Test/Exchange
Maintenance
For the Caterpillar 3054C, from the Caterpillar owner's manual.
Applies to: Caterpillar 3054C engine
Before you start
- Never wire brush or scrape a fuel injection nozzle.
- Fuel leaked or spilled onto hot surfaces or electrical components can cause a fire.
Procedure
- Fuel injection nozzles are subject to tip wear from fuel contamination.
- Isolate each nozzle one at a time to find the malfunctioning nozzle.
- Start the engine.
- Loosen each fuel line nut one at a time at the fuel injection pump, using a cloth to prevent spray.
- Tighten each nut before loosening the next one.
- If loosening a nut eliminates exhaust smoke without affecting performance, the nozzle is defective.
- Remove the suspected nozzle and install a new nozzle to verify.
- Clean, inspect, test, and replace nozzles as necessary using the 8S-2245 Injection Cleaning Tool Group.
