Before you start

  • The cooling system is pressurized. Do not remove the radiator cap while the engine is hot. Wrap a thick rag around cap while removing; slowly turn cap counterclockwise to the first stop, then press down and continue turning.

Procedure

  1. Remove radiator cap and make sure coolant is at correct level — no more than 25 mm (1 in.) below bottom of filler neck.
  2. Install cooling system pressure tester on radiator and pressurize system to 0.75 Bar (11 psi).
  3. Check hoses and connections (also for excessive bulging), radiator, water pump, intake manifold and bypass hose, and freeze plugs.
  4. System must maintain pressure during test.
  5. If pressure is not maintained and no external leaks found, check for internal leak such as blown head gasket or warped cylinder head or cylinder block.
