Kohler CH11 Generator Set

⚠ Certified engines may have fixed idle or limiter cap; adjust only within cap limits.

Tools: Tachometer

1. Run engine at half throttle 5 to 10 minutes to warm up before adjustment.
2. Place throttle in idle or slow position.
3. Turn low idle fuel adjusting needle out until engine speed decreases (rich); note position.
4. Turn needle in until engine speed decreases (lean); note position.
5. Set needle midway between rich and lean settings.
6. Set low idle speed to 1200 RPM ±75 RPM with low idle speed adjusting screw; check with tachometer.

1. Single cylinder: measure from the PTO end to the face of the block.
2. Twin cylinder: measure from the PTO end to the machined mounting surface of the closure plate.

1. Check the crankpin diameter of the unknown crankshaft.
2. Locate the matching dimension in the crankpin diameter column of the identification chart.
3. Compare main bearing and oil seal journal diameters to confirm the model series.
4. If diameters are shared by several models, check the Other Identifying Differences column.
5. Refer to the Common Features illustration at the start of each model section.

Tools: Drain pan

1. Clean area around oil fill cap/dipstick.
2. Remove oil drain plug and oil fill cap/dipstick; allow complete drainage.
3. Reinstall drain plug and tighten to 13.6 N·m (10 ft. lb.).
4. Fill crankcase with proper oil to 'F' mark.
5. Reinstall oil fill cap or plug and tighten securely.

Tools: Oil filter wrench

1. Drain oil from crankcase and allow oil filter to drain.
2. Clean area around oil filter and remove old filter; wipe mounting surface.
3. Fill new filter through threaded center hole with proper oil until oil reaches bottom of threads.
4. Allow a minute or two for oil to be absorbed.
5. Apply thin film of clean oil to rubber gasket.
6. Install filter clockwise until gasket contacts adapter, then tighten additional 3/4 to 1 turn.
7. Reinstall drain plug and fill crankcase to 'F' mark.
8. Start engine and check for oil leaks; correct leaks before service.

1. Make sure engine is stopped, level, and cool so oil drains into sump.
2. Clean area around oil fill cap/dipstick before removing it.
3. Remove dipstick and wipe oil off.
4. For press-on dipstick, reinsert and press onto tube; for thread-on, rest cap on tube without threading.
5. Check that oil level is up to but not over the 'F' mark.
6. Add proper oil if low; always check with dipstick before adding more.

Tools: Wire feeler gauge, Torque wrench

1. Clean area around base of spark plug before removing.
2. Remove plug and check condition; replace if worn or reuse questionable.
3. Do not clean spark plug with abrasive grit.
4. Check gap with wire feeler gauge; adjust by bending ground electrode.
5. Gap CH11-15 plugs to 1.02 mm (0.040 in.); CH16 to 0.76 mm (0.030 in.).
6. Reinstall spark plug and torque to 38.0-43.4 N·m (28-32 ft. lb.).

1. Loosen cover knob and remove cover.
2. Remove wing nut and air cleaner element with precleaner.
3. Remove precleaner and service as necessary.
4. Do not wash paper element or use pressurized air.
5. Replace dirty, bent, or damaged element with genuine Kohler element.
6. Check air cleaner base and element cover for damage or improper fit.
7. Reinstall all components.

1. Loosen air cleaner cover knob and remove cover.
2. Remove precleaner from paper element.
3. Wash precleaner in warm water with detergent; rinse thoroughly.
4. Squeeze out excess water without wringing; allow to air dry.
5. Saturate precleaner with new engine oil; squeeze out excess oil.
6. Reinstall precleaner over paper element.
7. Reinstall cover and tighten knob securely.

1. Clean exterior surfaces of engine.
2. Change oil and filter while engine is still warm.
3. Empty fuel system completely or treat gasoline with stabilizer.
4. If using stabilizer, add correct amount and run engine 2-3 minutes.
5. Remove spark plug; add one tablespoon engine oil into spark plug hole.
6. Install plug but do not connect lead; crank engine two or three revolutions.
7. Remove spark plug; cover hole with thumb and turn engine until piston is at top of stroke.
8. Reinstall plug but do not connect lead.
9. Store engine in clean, dry place.

⚠ Before extending or checking retractable starter rope, remove spark plug lead and place equipment in neutral.

1. For cold engine, place throttle midway between slow and fast and choke on.
2. For warm engine, place throttle/choke midway and choke on.
3. For retractable start, slowly pull starter handle until just past compression, then pull firmly.
4. For electric start, activate starter switch and release as soon as engine starts.
5. Do not crank continuously more than 10 seconds; allow 60 seconds cool down between attempts.
6. For cold engine, gradually return choke to off after engine starts and warms up.
7. For warm engine, return choke to off as soon as engine starts.

1. Remove load by disengaging all PTO attachments.
2. For engines without shutdown solenoid, move throttle to slow or low idle and run 30-60 seconds; then stop.
3. For engines with shutdown solenoid, position throttle between half and full; then stop.
