Procedures
7Generator Voltage Checks diagnostic
⚠ High voltage is present at transfer switch and terminals.
Tools: Accurate AC voltmeter, Frequency meter
- On the generator panel, select MANUAL mode; the generator will crank and start.
- Allow generator to stabilize and warm up at no-load for at least five minutes.
- Set generator main circuit breaker (CB1) to ON.
- Check no-load voltage and frequency across ATS terminal lugs E1 to E2, E1 to NEUTRAL, and E2 to NEUTRAL.
- When certain three phase rotation and generator supply voltage are correct, turn OFF generator supply.
- Set generator main circuit breaker (CB1) to OFF.
- On the generator panel, select OFF to shut down the generator.
Utility Voltage Checks diagnostic
⚠ High voltage is present at transfer switch and terminals.
Tools: AC voltmeter, Digital Multimeter (DMM) with LowZ setting
- Turn ON the UTILITY power supply to the transfer switch.
- With an accurate AC voltmeter, check voltage across ATS terminal lugs N1 and N2.
- Measure N1 to NEUTRAL and N2 to NEUTRAL.
Checking Automatic Operation operation
- Verify generator is OFF.
- Set transfer switch utility service disconnect circuit breaker to OFF.
- Verify switch is de-energized.
- Install front cover of the transfer switch.
- Set transfer switch utility service disconnect circuit breaker to ON.
- Set generator main circuit breaker to ON.
- Select AUTO on generator panel.
- Set transfer switch utility service disconnect circuit breaker to OFF and allow system to operate through automatic sequence.
Close to Standby Source Side operation
⚠ Do not use excessive force while manually operating the transfer switch.
Tools: Manual handle
- Verify Window B position; if ON, contacts are already closed in EMERGENCY position.
- If OFF, attach handle to actuating shaft.
- Move handle in direction of arrow on switch cover until it stops; do not force.
- Release handle slowly to allow switch spring to relax.
- Confirm OFF appears in Window A and ON appears in Window B.
Generator Tests Under Load operation
⚠ Do not overload the generator.
Tools: AC voltmeter, Frequency meter
- Turn OFF the utility power supply to the transfer switch.
- Set utility service disconnect circuit breaker to OFF and turn OFF all load circuit breakers.
- Manually actuate transfer switch main contacts to the emergency (standby) position.
- Select MANUAL mode to start generator and allow engine to stabilize for a few minutes.
- Set the generator main circuit breaker to ON.
- Turn on electrical loads to full rated wattage/amperage capacity; do not overload.
- Check voltage and frequency across transfer switch terminals E1 and E2; frequency should be greater than 59 Hz.
- Run generator under rated load for at least 30 minutes and listen for unusual noises, vibration, or overheating.
- Set generator main circuit breaker to OFF when checkout under load is complete.
- Allow generator to run at no-load for several minutes, then shut down by selecting OFF.
- Move main switch contacts to utility position.
- Turn on utility power supply to transfer switch.
Manual Operation Check operation
⚠ Do not manually transfer under load. Disconnect transfer switch from all power sources prior to manual transfer.
Tools: Manual handle
- Verify generator is OFF.
- Turn OFF both utility and emergency power supplies to the transfer switch.
- Observe display windows A and B to determine contact position.
- Window A ON and Window B OFF: LOAD terminals are connected to utility terminals.
- Window A OFF and Window B ON: LOAD terminals are connected to emergency terminals.
Shutting Generator Down While Under Load operation
⚠ To avoid equipment damage, follow these steps in order when shutting the generator down during utility outages.
- Turn the main utility disconnect off.
- Turn the generator MLCB (generator disconnect) to OFF.
- Run the generator for approximately one minute for proper cooling.
- Turn the generator OFF.
- To turn generator back ON, put generator into AUTO, start generator, and warm up for a few minutes.
- Set the MLCB (generator disconnect) to ON.
