5Aftercooler Core - Clean/Test maintenance
⚠ High caustic cleaner concentration can damage core
⚠ Wear protective face shield and clothing when using pressure air
Tools: Hydrosolv liquid cleaner (1U-5490 or 174-6854 - 19L/5 US gallon), Steam cleaner, Compressed air system, Protective face shield, Protective clothing
- Remove the core per Service Manual
- Turn core upside-down to remove debris
- Back flush core with Hydrosolv liquid cleaner (2-5% concentration, max 93C/200F)
- Steam clean core to remove residue and flush fins
- Remove any trapped debris
- Wash core with hot soapy water and rinse thoroughly with clean water
- Dry core with compressed air, directing air in reverse flow direction
- Maximum air pressure at nozzle must be less than 205 kPa (30 psi)
- Inspect core to ensure cleanliness
- Pressure test the core (shops servicing radiators can perform this)
- Repair core if necessary
- Install core per Service Manual
Alternator Belt - Inspect/Adjust/Replace maintenance
⚠ Inspect belt for wear and cracking before adjustment
⚠ Replace belts in matched sets only; new single belt will carry excessive load if paired with stretched older belts

Battery Electrolyte Level - Check maintenance
⚠ Sulfuric acid in lead-acid batteries can burn skin and clothing
⚠ Wear face shield and protective clothing when working with batteries
⚠ Ensure full charge to help prevent battery freezing

- Remove filler caps
- Maintain electrolyte level to FULL mark on battery
- If water addition necessary, use distilled water (or clean water low in minerals if distilled unavailable)
- Do not use artificially softened water
- Check electrolyte condition with 1U-7298 or 1U-7297 Coolant/Battery Tester
- Keep batteries clean
- Clean battery case with 0.1L baking soda + 1L clean water, OR 0.1L ammonia + 1L clean water
- Thoroughly rinse battery case with clean water
- Use fine grade sandpaper to clean terminals and cable clamps until bright/shiny
- Do not excessively remove material as this prevents proper clamp fit
- Coat clamps and terminals with 5N-5561 Silicone Lubricant, petroleum jelly, or MPGM grease
Cooling System Coolant (DEAC) - Change maintenance
⚠ Hot coolant causes serious burns; allow engine to cool before opening filler cap
⚠ Commercially available cleaners may damage cooling system components
⚠ Use only Caterpillar-approved cleaning products
Tools: Hydrosolve liquid cleaners (1U-5490 or 174-6854), Steam cleaner, 9S-8140 Pressurizing Pump
- Stop engine and allow cooling
- Loosen cooling system filler cap slowly to relieve pressure
- Remove cooling system filler cap
- Open cooling system drain valve (if equipped) or remove drain plugs
- Remove drain plug from cylinder block
- For 3054/3054B: Remove drain plug from pipe for jacket water pump
- For 3056: Remove drain plug from heat exchanger and water cooled exhaust manifold
- Allow coolant to drain completely
- Flush cooling system with clean water to remove debris
- Close drain valve and clean/install drain plugs per torque specs
- Fill with Caterpillar Fast Acting Cooling System Cleaner mixture (0.5L cleaner per 15L system capacity for normal cleaning, or 0.5L per 3.8-7.6L capacity for heavy deposits)
- Install cooling system filler cap
- Start and run engine at low idle for minimum 30 minutes (90 minutes for heavily deposited systems) with coolant temp at least 82C
- Stop engine, allow cooling, loosen filler cap slowly to relieve pressure
- Drain and flush again with clean water until all cleaner signs are gone
