Engine Valve Lash - Inspect/Adjust adjustment

⚠ Hot engine components can cause burns; allow the engine to cool.

⚠ Only qualified service personnel should perform this maintenance.

  1. Ensure that the engine cannot be started while this maintenance is performed.
  2. Ensure that the engine is stopped before measuring the valve lash.
  3. Measure and adjust the valve lash clearance. The lash can be inspected and adjusted hot or cold.
  4. Refer to Systems Operation, Testing and Adjusting, Engine Valve Lash - Inspect/Adjust for the complete procedure.
Fuel Injector - Test diagnostic
  1. Run the engine at low idle.
  2. Perform the test procedures to determine if a fuel injector does not work correctly.
  3. Identify the suspect fuel injector.
Turbocharger - Inspect (If Equipped) diagnostic

⚠ The compressor housing for the turbocharger must not be removed from the turbocharger for cleaning.

⚠ The actuator linkage is connected to the compressor housing. If the actuator linkage is moved or disturbed the engine may not comply with emissions legislation.

  1. Remove the pipe from the turbocharger exhaust outlet and remove the air intake pipe.
  2. Visually inspect the piping for oil. Clean the interior of the pipes to prevent dirt entry.
  3. Check for oil. Oil leaking from the back side of the compressor wheel may indicate a failed oil seal.
  4. Inspect the bore of the turbine outlet housing for corrosion.
  5. Fasten the air intake pipe and the exhaust outlet pipe to the turbocharger housing.

Alternator and Fan Belts - Replace maintenance

⚠ Replacing only one belt of a matched set will cause the new belt to carry more load because the older belt is stretched.

  1. Move the alternator in order to increase or decrease the belt tension.
  2. Tighten adjusting bolt (1).
  3. Tighten mounting bolts (2). Refer to the Specifications Manual for the correct torque settings.
  4. For multiple drive belts, replace the belts in matched sets.

Battery - Replace maintenance

⚠ Batteries give off combustible gases which can explode. A spark can cause the gases to ignite.

⚠ Battery cables or batteries should not be removed with the battery cover in place.

⚠ Always recycle a battery. Never discard a battery.

  1. Switch the engine to the OFF position. Remove all electrical loads.
  2. Turn off and disconnect any battery chargers.
  3. Disconnect the NEGATIVE "-" cable from the NEGATIVE "-" battery terminal.
  4. Disconnect the POSITIVE "+" cable from the POSITIVE "+" battery terminal.
  5. Remove the used battery.
  6. Install the new battery.
  7. Connect the cable from the starting motor to the POSITIVE "+" battery terminal.
Cooling System - Drain maintenance

⚠ Do not drain the coolant while the engine is still hot and the system is under pressure.

⚠ To prevent frost damage, ensure that all the coolant is removed from the engine.

  1. Ensure that the vehicle is on level ground.
  2. Remove the filler cap of the cooling system.
  3. Remove the drain plug (1) from the side of the cylinder block to drain the engine.
  4. Open the tap or remove the radiator drain plug to drain the radiator.
  5. Flush the cooling system with clean water.
  6. Fit the drain plugs and the filler cap. Close the tap or connect the radiator hose.
  7. Fill the cooling system with an approved antifreeze mixture.
  8. Operate the engine for a short period to circulate oil and coolant.
Cooling System Coolant (ELC) - Change maintenance

⚠ Pressurized system: Hot coolant can cause serious burns

⚠ Do not use conventional coolant to top off ELC system

  1. Stop engine and allow to cool. Loosen filler cap slowly to relieve pressure.
  2. Remove filler cap. Open drain cock or remove drain plug on engine and radiator. Drain coolant.
  3. Flush cooling system with clean water.
  4. Close drain cock or install drain plug on engine and radiator.
  5. Fill cooling system with clean water. Install filler cap.
  6. Start and run engine at low idle until 49 to 66°C (120 to 150°F).
  7. Stop engine and allow to cool. Drain water. Flush with clean water.
  8. Close drain cock or install drain plug. Fill with Extended Life Coolant (ELC).
  9. Start and run engine at low idle, then high idle for one minute to purge air.
  10. Check coolant level; maintain within 13 mm below filler pipe.
  11. Inspect filler cap gasket; replace if damaged. Pressure test cap.
  12. Start engine and inspect for leaks.
Engine Air Cleaner Element - Replace maintenance

⚠ Never run the engine without an air cleaner element installed.

⚠ Never service the air cleaner element with the engine running.

  1. Ensure the outer body of the air cleaner is clean and free from dirt.
  2. Inspect the top cover; remove and clean if necessary and reinstall.
  3. Remove the end cover from the air cleaner body; clean it and check the vacuum valve.
  4. Remove the primary air filter element (and secondary element if equipped) and discard.
  5. Install the new secondary element (if equipped) and the new primary element.
  6. Install the end cover to the air cleaner body and secure; reset the air service indicator if necessary.
Engine Crankcase Breather - Replace maintenance

⚠ Make sure the breather assembly components are installed correctly; engine damage may occur.

  1. Loosen the screws and remove the breather cover from the valve mechanism cover.
  2. Remove the spring; remove the diaphragm and plate.
  3. For turbocharged engines, remove the spacer and the joint.
  4. Clean the vent hole and the cavity in the valve mechanism cover.
  5. For turbocharged engines, install a new joint and the spacer.
  6. Install a new diaphragm and plate into the cavity (or spacer).
  7. Install a new spring.
  8. Install the breather cover and the four screws; tighten the screws.
