Common problems

15
  • Stops suddenly
    Cause: Fault shutdown
Fix: Check for a fault shutdown code on the controller’s LED display. Correct the fault and then move the generator set master switch to OFF/RESET to reset the controller.
  • Operates erratically
    Cause: Air cleaner clogged
    Fix: Replace element.
  • Lacks power
Cause: Air intake restriction, inadequate cooling
Fix: Inspect air intakes and exhaust for obstructions. Check air cleaner.
  • Generator set does not crank
    Cause: Weak or dead battery
Fix: Recharge or replace battery. If battery is weak or dead, check battery charger fuse, power supply, and operation.
  • No output voltage
Cause: AC output circuit breaker open
Fix: Check for AC voltage on the generator side of circuit breaker. If there is AC voltage on the generator side of the breaker, then a problem in the load circuits is causing the line circuit breaker to trip. Check for and correct short circuits or overloading on the load side before resetting the circuit breaker.
  • Cranks but does not start
    Cause: No fuel
Fix: Open (turn on) manual fuel valve. Check fuel supply tank (LP).
  • The generator set does not crank.
    Cause: Battery weak or dead
Fix: Check power to the battery charger. Recharge or replace the battery.
  • Low output or excessive drop in voltage
    Cause: Generator overloaded
    Fix: Reduce load.
  • Generator set stops suddenly.
    Cause: Low oil pressure shutdown
    Fix: Check the oil level.
  • Starts hard
    Cause: Low battery voltage
Fix: Check battery voltage and battery charger connections, power supply, and operation.
  • Controller LED display is off
Cause: No power to the controller: Continuous power mode jumper is disconnected and the generator set has not run for 48 hours or longer.
Fix: Controller display will automatically activate when a remote start command is received or the generator set master switch is moved to the RUN position. Connect the jumper to maintain continuous power to the controller, if desired. See Sections 2.3.6 and 6.9.3.
  • The generator set cranks but does not start, starts hard, lacks power, or operates erratically.
    Cause: Air cleaner clogged
Fix: Clean and/or replace the air cleaner.
  • The generator set cranks but does not start, starts hard, lacks power, or operates erratically
    Cause: Air cleaner clogged
Fix: Clean and/or replace the air cleaner.
  • The generator set cranks but does not start, starts hard, lacks power or operates erratically.
    Cause: Air cleaner clogged
Fix: Clean and/or replace the air cleaner.
  • Generator set stops suddenly
    Cause: Low oil pressure shutdown
Fix: Check the oil level. Check for signs of oil leaks.

  6. Adjust fuel metering valve to obtain specified oxygen sensor output.
  7. Seal metering valve adjustment screws with thread sealant.
  8. Remove load and cool genset 5-10 minutes; stop genset.
  9. Disconnect battery negative lead first; allow exhaust to cool.
  10. Remove oxygen sensor and reinstall exhaust plug with antiseize; reconnect battery negative lead last and battery charger.
Mechanical Governor Arm Adjustment Procedure adjustment

⚠ Accidental starting can cause severe injury or death.

Tools: Nail

  1. Make sure throttle linkage is connected to governor arm and carburetor throttle lever.
  2. Loosen the hex nut holding the governor lever to the cross shaft.

  8. Disconnect magnetic pickup leads and open circuit breaker to test controller governing function.
  9. Move throttle shaft/stepper motor fully counterclockwise (closed throttle).
  10. Start the generator set; stepper motor should step clockwise to wide open throttle and remain there.
  11. Place master switch in STOP; check stepper motor connections (leads 1A, 1B, 2A, 2B to P1-4, P1-5, P1-6, P1-7).
  12. Check stepper motor coil resistance across pins 2 and 3 and across pins 1 and 4.
Network Bridge Diagnostics diagnostic
  1. Check the network LEDs on the RJ45 connector for Ethernet network communication.
  2. Check the STAT LED; if not lit, check connections and the engine starting battery.
  3. Check the TX and RX LEDs for CAN data transmission and reception.
  4. If neither the TX nor the RX LED flashes, check bridge power, connections, and settings.
  5. If only one of the TX or RX LEDs flashes, check the connected devices on the generator set (CAN) side.
